The Associate, Sustainable Investing (Climate and Energy Transition) is an entrepreneurial and analytically driven professional who is passionate about the opportunity to help shape the low-carbon transition at scale. This role sits at the intersection of strategy, data, and real-world execution, they will work directly with portfolio companies and internal partners to accelerate decarbonization, strengthen climate resilience, and support long-term value creation for the fund.
As a core member of one of Canada’s leading Sustainable Investing teams, the Associate will contribute to fund-level climate initiatives while engaging deeply with portfolio companies to design and advance credible transition and decarbonization plans. The Associate will collaborate across teams to assess systemic climate risks and concentrations, support ESG due diligence for private investments, contribute research and analytics to stewardship and climate strategies, and help mobilize fund-wide climate programs.

Who You’ll Work With
- The Sustainable Investing (SI) team has 15 members and works across the organization to ensure that the Fund is effectively managing sustainability related risks and opportunities across the investment lifecycle
- The Associate will report to the Director, Climate and Energy Transition, who is primarily responsible for implementing our work with private investments across all sectors, including Real Estate, Infrastructure, Natural Resources, Private Equity, and Teachers’ Venture Growth, to evaluate and implement climate transition plans and strategies
- Given the cross-departmental nature of the Sustainable Investing team, the Associate will interact on a frequent basis with colleagues from various divisions and teams across the fund, especially the private investment departments
- Work with other SI team members on a range of fund-level climate change initiatives.
- Work with portfolio companies to establish transition and/or decarbonization plans – will include evaluating and identifying operational programs or capital project opportunities, contributing to capital planning processes and discussions, providing support for business cases, and supporting implementation as needed
- Provide expertise in emissions management and monitoring
- Keep abreast of developments in the climate change space, including policy and regulatory changes, evolving GHG accounting standards, and industry initiatives
- Support ESG due diligence for private deals – desktop research, review of consultant reports, participation in meetings with deal teams and consultants
- Support cross–asset class analysis of systemic risk drivers and concentrations using top-down and bottom-up approaches, including the application of climate risk tools and environmental data to assess physical and transition risks
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders in the execution of fund-wide climate change programs and initiatives
- Provide research, analytics and communication materials to support any of the evolving climate change, stewardship and social strategies across SI
- Support other related initiatives as required
- Minimum Bachelor; Masters degree in engineering, environment, climate science, finance or other relevant field an asset
- Completion of the CFA (or underway) would be an asset but not required
- Knowledge of and passion for sustainable investing, the energy transition and addressing climate change
- Experience working on decarbonization plans
- Quantitative modelling skillset (excel, python, matlab, etc.) an asset
- Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills (both oral and written) – particularly an ability to understand and communicate technical climate and sustainability material to investment professionals and company management
- Familiarity with investment-related concepts, such as valuation models, capital markets and fundamental company analysis an asset
- Works well independently or as a member of a team
- Highly adaptable, flexible and comfortable with ambiguity
- Ability to manage multiple and changing priorities
- 2-5 years related experience in energy, decarbonization, sustainability, or climate consulting. Direct experience in asset management or value creation with climate change/decarbonization focus an asset.
