About Onja

Onja trains underprivileged youth into world-class software developers. Our organisation is unified by a common mission: give life-changing work through sustainable social enterprise.

We are recognised for our innovative model that finds exceptional talent where opportunity is scarce, invests in its development, and connects it directly to the global tech economy. Through an intensive two-and-a-half-year program, we co-create pathways to long-term social and economic stability that prioritise self-reliance.

We operate as one integrated organisation, where education, hiring, and partner collaboration work together to deliver high-performing tech talent with lasting social impact. Onja developers invest in their own futures and in their nation’s development, while ensuring Onja remains self-funding and scalable, paying forward opportunities to the next generation.

Onja is located in Toamasina, a lively city with beautiful beaches, nice restaurants, and with plenty to do and see. Toamasina is Madagascar’s second largest city (population 300,000) yet is surrounded by plenty of natural beauty, and even has a national park nearby.

About The Role

The Onja Carbon Field Officer will support the project delivery of a clean-cooking carbon offset project. The role will combine distribution support, community engagement, data collection, and project reporting. We are looking for someone who is flexible, reliable, and has good judgement, who is comfortable travelling to remote areas on the East Coast of Madagascar and loves communicating and connecting with people from all backgrounds. As we move through the different stages of the project, the Onja Carbon Field Officer should be adaptable, excited to learn new skills as our daily tasks and priorities evolve.

We believe in hiring based on potential, attitude and cultural fit rather than specific qualifications.

Your Responsibilities Will Include

  • Support with the planning and delivery of cookstove distribution activities, including household surveys and registration, co-ordinating logistics and keeping records.
  • Build respectful and long-lasting relationships with participating households, community members and other stakeholders involved in the project.
  • Support and, where required, coordinate Onja operations team members in implementation of stove distribution when in the field, effectively resolve problems which may arise, communicating transparently with the rest of the team.
  • Effectively communicate and explain the carbon offset project to participating households. Lead training sessions demonstrating stove use are engaging and empathetic, ensuring participants understand and feel comfortable providing feedback and asking questions.
  • Collect reliable field data through household surveys, monitoring visits, interviews, photographs, GPS records and other relevant methods.
  • Review field data for missing, inconsistent or unusual data and raise any potential problems as they occur.
  • Maintain organised and verifiable records of stove distribution, household participation, stove use and other related activities.
  • Prepare clear and timely field updates and contribute to internal reports, carbon-project monitoring and external verification processes, where relevant.
  • Contribute flexibly and proactively to field activities as we grow our project.

Requirements

  • Twelve month commitment (this ensures sufficient time to make a truly meaningful impact) with potential to renew/extend.
  • Great communicator with people from all backgrounds: open-minded, respectful and empathetic and a good judge of character and confident to lead training sessions with countryside communities.
  • Flexible and adaptable: Willing to travel to different parts of the East Coast of Madagascar to implement our cookstove project.
  • Well-organised and detail-oriented: Comfortable maintaining accurate records and managing multiple activities at once.
  • Growth mindset: Demonstrates curiosity and the ability to learn unfamiliar sometimes technical subjects, including carbon-project requirements and data systems.

Candidates can anticipate that reference checks will be conducted as part of our thorough evaluation process.
