Our client, a nationally recognized law firm with a leading Energy & Natural Resources practice, is seeking an Associate or Senior Attorney with significant energy transactional experience to join its Regulatory Affairs team. This role offers the opportunity to advise energy developers, utilities, large power users, and other industry stakeholders on complex energy infrastructure and regulatory matters.
Position Overview
The successful candidate will work on sophisticated energy transactions involving power generation, transmission, and large-load projects. This role is ideal for an attorney with experience navigating the commercial, regulatory, and operational aspects of the energy industry and who enjoys working at the intersection of transactional and regulatory law.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft, negotiate, and advise clients on:
- Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs)
- Interconnection Agreements
- Electric Service Agreements
- Transmission Service Agreements
- Large Load and energy infrastructure transactions
- Counsel energy developers, utilities, transmission providers, and large commercial and industrial customers on energy-related contractual matters.
- Advise clients on regulatory and operational issues affecting energy projects and utility operations.
- Support project development, financing, transmission, and power procurement initiatives.
- Coordinate with clients, regulators, consultants, and internal legal teams to facilitate successful transactions.
- Monitor and analyze evolving energy market and regulatory developments impacting client operations.
Qualifications
- J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
- 5–10 years of energy transactional experience.
- Significant experience with:
- Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs)
- Interconnection Agreements (generation, transmission, and load)
- Transmission service matters
- Electric service agreements
- Large-load energy transactions
- Other energy industry-specific commercial agreements
- Strong drafting, negotiation, and client counseling skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Strong academic credentials.
- Active bar admission in Idaho, Minnesota, Arizona, or Utah, or the ability to become admitted in the applicable jurisdiction.
Preferred Experience
Candidates with experience before federal or state energy regulatory agencies are strongly encouraged to apply, including:
- Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) matters
- State public utility commission proceedings
- Energy market regulation
- Utility compliance and regulatory strategy
