GRA has an opportunity for a proactive senior advisor to join the Climate Change team on a temporary basis. We are seeking people with excellent interpersonal and communication skills who are committed to world class customer service.

About You

You will be supporting the climate change program of work for the Department of Customer Service. You will develop and define our approach, work with teams and entities across the Department to operationalise our approach, and assist with interpreting incoming policy/legislative changes in the climate change space.

A key focus of this role will be working closely with colleagues in other Departments and contributing to Department-wide and sector-wide forums. This role reports to the Principal Climate Change Risk Officer.

Key responsibilities include to:

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders across the Department and Whole of Government
  • Drive climate change capability uplift across the Department
  • Work closely with other central and/or local teams to provide climate change advice, guidance and support to business stakeholders
  • Embed climate change considerations into practices that inform decision making or planning activities
  • Actively identify, assess and manage climate-related risks across the Department, including identifying areas of concentrated risks, or the cascading and compounding effects of climate change on other risks
  • Develop and maintain a coordinated approach to climate-related opportunity identification and management across the portfolio
  • Assess climate change maturity across the portfolio and advise actions to enhance maturity
  • Coordinate and support Department-wide key activities, including providing climate change input into existing policy or framework reviews, writing reports and briefs for key governance forums and committees, providing support for agencies undergoing climate risk assessments and interpreting emerging climate change policy/legislative requirements.
  • Support the Climate Change Risk Officer with the delivery of Whole of Government initiatives

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:

  • Exceptional customer service skills and ability to partner and negotiate with key and often multiple stakeholders simultaneously, to achieve a common objective
  • Demonstrate experience of climate change management where possible, or overall risk management (experience in the NSW public sector is preferable but not essential)
  • Strong understanding of climate change information including but not limited to risk assessments, capability building, embedding climate considerations into decision-making and mandatory requirements including legislated targets or climate-related financial disclosures
  • A clear and effective communication style which influences and creates opportunities for others to be heard
  • Proven ability to stay calm under pressure in challenging situations and unpredictable environments, be able to pivot quickly and respond effectively to multiple tasks and emerging issues in a timely manner
  • Ability to interpret complex business needs, by navigating a range of possibilities and problem-solving to achieve a beneficial result.

This is a great opportunity for someone wanting to make a positive impact and drive change in the climate change space within the public sector, and learn more about NSW Government's approach to climate change. It will require engaging with Deputy Secretaries, Executive Directors, Directors and Managers across the Departmental and Sector contacts.
