Role Description The Senior Climate Scientist is a full-time, on-site role based in Australia, responsible for providing advanced scientific leadership on climate-related research and analysis. This role leads the design and delivery of climate modeling, data analysis, and risk assessment projects that inform government policy, adaptation strategies, and long-term planning. The Senior Climate Scientist collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to translate complex climate science into practical guidance for policymakers, program managers, and community stakeholders. Day-to-day activities include managing research projects, supervising junior scientists, preparing technical reports and briefings, contributing to peer-reviewed publications, and representing the department in expert panels and stakeholder meetings. The role also supports continuous improvement in climate data infrastructure and promotes best practices in climate science across the organization.
Qualifications
- Strong expertise in climate science, atmospheric science, or environmental science, including experience with climate models, climate projections, and impact assessment.
- Advanced skills in quantitative analysis, statistics, and handling large environmental and climate datasets, preferably using tools such as R, Python, or similar analytical software.
- Proven ability to communicate complex scientific findings clearly to non-technical audiences through reports, presentations, and policy briefings.
- Demonstrated experience in leading research projects, supervising or mentoring scientific staff, and working within multidisciplinary teams.
- Relevant postgraduate qualification (e.g., Master’s or PhD) in climate science, meteorology, environmental science, or a closely related discipline.
- Knowledge of climate change adaptation and mitigation policy frameworks, and experience working with government or public-sector stakeholders is highly desirable.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and maintain high scientific standards.
