Nikola is a company trying to change the world by revolutionizing the transportation and energy industries through the manufacturing and sale of zero-emission heavy-duty trucks and the deployment of production and fueling infrastructure needed to support them. Nikola is looking to add a Government Grants and Proposal Project Manager to our team who can support Nikola’s ambitious goals to rapidly accelerate the adoption of zero-emission heavy-duty trucks and the deployment of production and fueling infrastructure by strategically identifying, applying for, and ultimately securing government grants, incentive funding, and contracts through competitive solicitations.
Responsibilities:
This position will report directly to the Team Lead for Sustainability and Government Affairs and will support Nikola’s truck, infrastructure, and hydrogen production and sourcing needs. A successful candidate will:
  • Develop and operate with an understanding of the business’s needs, interests, and capabilities
  • Identify, track, and analyze relevant federal, state, and local government grant funding solicitations and incentive opportunities that are aligned with and inform the business’s strategy and key market opportunities
  • Develop and maintain a working database of current or upcoming federal, state, and local government grant funding and incentive opportunities
  • Recommend which states and regions have active and growing incentives to drive and support business development efforts
  • Recommend specific funding opportunities to pursue that support the business’s strategy, growth, and sales
  • Lead the process of drafting, gathering internal team input, editing, and submitting grant funding, incentive and award applications
  • Assist with the coordination and communication between Teams to ensure grant projects meet all minimum requirements, expectations and timelines.
  • Lead drafting and submission of periodical grant progress reports as well as lead any project management meetings with agencies administering grant program(s).
  • Support regulatory engagement or lobbying efforts to drive for success in receiving funding; and
  • Stay informed on and engaged in regulatory and policy activities across the nation that may impact the economics of and requirements for zero emission vehicles and fueling, charging, and hydrogen production and distribution infrastructure
Additionally, the position may be involved in recommending and participating in competitive solicitations for truck sales and/or infrastructure development and/or public policy development that advances the company’s goals, including summarizing, and drafting responses or comments to key state or federal public policy proceedings relating to hydrogen production, transportation, and dispensing, and zero emission vehicles. Additional ad hoc assignments may be assigned to support related needs.
Nikola is looking for driven, self-motivated, and organized individuals who would like to play an impactful role in shaping the push to zero emissions transportation solutions. Candidates will display strong leadership, communication, reading and writing, and project management skills. Candidates should be able to work in a dynamic environment and be prepared to make sense of and bring structure to the wide range of incentives across the United States.
Qualifications:
This will be a full-time position based in Phoenix, AZ.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in successfully applying for and receiving grant and incentive funding
  • Must possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public policy, English, business, economics, sustainability, environmental studies, or other related fields.
  • Highly organized and capable of managing and driving forward multiple concurrent projects
  • Motivated by the understanding of how grants, incentives, and contracts support and directly contribute to the growth and success of the business
  • Self-motivated, driven, and intellectually curious individual capable of working collegially and collaboratively in a team setting
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities that focuses on utilizing collaborative and inclusive approaches to gathering input and feedback while driving to meet deadlines
  • Detail-oriented and focused, despite potentially working under urgent timelines
  • Clear, precise, articulate, and persuasive writing skills
  • High proficiency in English reading, writing, and communication
  • Ability to change voice and writing style to fit a particular audience and purpose
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office software, including Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Strongly preferred to have experience in energy or transportation industries
  • Preference for a Masters degree
