Position Summary

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director, Corporate Finance is responsible for the effective management and administration of all accounting and budgeting functions for the Nature Conservancy of Canada. This includes:

  • Coordinating the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual consolidated financial statements, including budgets, with an analysis to be presented to senior management, the Audit Committee and the National Board
  • Plans, supervises, manages and ensures completion of annual external audit
  • Planning national grant implementation, reporting and completion of audits of grants
  • Oversees completion of annual returns required by government agencies
  • Oversight and management of financial systems, controls and processes
  • Provides and supports training and project management as and when required

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervisor of 4 staff (Controller, Corporate Accounting; Manager, National Office Accounting; Coordinator, Corporate Finance and Coordinator, Project Accounting)
  • Manages the effective operation of the Corporate team within the Finance department, including the training and professional development of accounting staff
  • Prioritizes staff workload and handles tasks effectively based on priority and complexity
  • Has day-to-day responsibility for:
    • Responsible for corporate financial accounting systems which includes systems support and administration – Financial Edge NXT, Tenrox, Concur and other secondary systems supporting the Finance function
    • Ensures that NCC has adequate internal controls to safeguard organizational assets
    • Develops and implements accounting systems and procedures, and provides advice and assistance to staff regarding financial practices and policies
    • Ensures financial data is in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), CRA requirements and other regulatory or banking requirements
  • Reporting – Internal:
    • The production of the timeline schedules for quarter end reporting, budget planning and preparation document
    • Prepares supporting information for quarterly financial statements and associated financial packages for the Audit Committee
    • Provides support for the development and review of the annual budget
    • Preparation of quarterly financial statements of affiliated entities
    • Participates in Audit Committee and Investment Committee meetings
  • Reporting – External
    • Supervises and is responsible for the accuracy of all Federal and provincial sales tax returns
    • Ensures the timely and accurate completion of the T3010 charities return
    • Responsible for the planning and completion of the annual audit process, ensuring appropriate and timely communication to all parties involved
    • Primary day-to-day relationship manager for the external audit team
    • Responsible for planning and completion of annual audit process of other affiliated entities
  • Collaborates with the Director, Regional Finance and program management to ensure accurate and up-to-date standard operating procedures are maintained and adhered to
  • Creates and communicates new practices where necessary to ensure best practices across the organization and document Finance related policies, procedures, and related forms
  • Ensures that all current and archival accounting files comply with corporate and legal retention requirements
  • Responsible for payment approvals, fund transfers etc. based on authorized levels
  • Providing leadership and assistance to any finance project(s) where specialized experience or technical skills are required. This would include functioning as the Project Manager in many cases
  • Providing training, technical, and operational support to staff as needed
  • Oversight in ensuring timely completion of financial statements for NCC’s affiliates (CNQ, AFCN) audits and regulatory reporting
  • Any other duties as assigned
  • Other key relationships:
    • This position supports and is also supported by the Vice President, Corporate Services; Director, Regional Finance; Director, Treasury; Director, Database & Gift Administration and Compliance

Position Requirements

  • C.P.A. designation
  • 5 years working knowledge in accounting and finance with at least 3 years supervisory experience.
  • Management and Audit Committee reporting in a similar-sized or larger organization
  • Experience in the Charities sector would be an asset
  • A self-starter with demonstrated time management and prioritization skills including demonstrated ability to plan, organize and manage multiple demands and competing priorities
  • Demonstrated flexibility, switching readily between project and production work
  • Demonstrated leadership skills. Positively influence others to achieve results that are in the best interest of the organization. Ready to take full responsibility of the Finance function at NCC
  • Ability to manage a diverse and widespread team, including managing team members who have a joint reporting structure
  • Ability to work in a team with NCC staff from across the organization, including the ability to positively influence results where the incumbent may not have direct reporting authority
  • Builds effective working relationships with internal and external partners
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Overall good interpersonal skills
  • Strong accounting and analytical skills
  • Ability to obtain pertinent information from a variety of sources
  • Judgment, for example, in understanding what needs to be escalated to the CFO
  • Strong information technology experience, including Microsoft Office suite and accounting software; Financial Edge NXT, Raisers’ Edge NXT would be an asset
  • Bilingualism would be an asset
