Assistant GIS and Conservation Data

Position Summary
A highly organized individual is required to assist in the compilation, analysis and display of both spatial and tabular data to assist the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s (NCC) Ontario programs. Reporting to the Director of Conservation Planning and Stewardship and working with the Ontario GIS team, this individual will use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to produce multi-scale maps, create spatial databases, compile and align datasets, and analyze and present data in support of NCC’s administrative, conservation planning, securement, stewardship and development (fundraising) projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Complete GIS tasks via the internal GIS request system, consulting with the GIS Coordinators.
- Assist with the GIS aspects of landscape scale special projects, including generating map products and associated statistics for invasive species control, restoration, and other large projects;
- Lead in processing and reporting NCC Ontario’s species data, including liaising with field staff, maintaining an organized database and coordinating yearly submissions to the Natural Heritage Information Centre and other partners;
- Assist with compiling and managing NCC Ontario’s tabular and spatial datasets; implement data backup procedures, track data holdings, and update and document (with metadata) datasets as needed, and integrate these with any cloud-based or similar systems as these develop;
- Support program staff in GIS, data management, and field data collection support needs, and provide technical support for data management and GIS software/hardware;
- Produce standardised maps and generate metrics to support NCC’s conservation planning; and other output products associated with administrative, securement, stewardship, and development projects;
- Assist in acquiring, compiling, aligning, and verifying third party datasets;
- Assist with supervising GIS partnership projects with interns and colleges/universities;
- Participate in internal GIS working groups;
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Conservation Planning and Stewardship, or GIS Coordinators.
Position Requirements
- University graduate in geomatics or geography with significant course work in geographic information systems (GIS) or have a certificate in GIS from an accredited college, and a minimum of six months GIS-focused work experience;
- Knowledge of Ontario landscape ecology, including species at risk, invasive species, and other conservation-related topics and associated natural resource data;
- At least one year of school and/or work experience with ESRI GIS software (ArcGIS Pro), as well as various database, and spreadsheet software;
- Experience with ArcGIS Online, including publishing services, creating online mapping products (storymaps, dashboards, web apps), and using integrated products such as Survey123;
- Experience with ESRI Field Maps is required and experience creating field data collection projects for field teams is an asset;
- Knowledge and demonstrated proficiency of GIS specific programming languages such as Arcade, Python and the Arcpy library, SQL;
- Ability to create, update, manipulate, analyze, and document spatial and non-spatial data;
- Knowledge of and proficiency with ESRI geoprocessing tools and basic spatial analysis methodology;
- Demonstrated ability to create professional and visually-pleasing map products (both static and online mapping), using standard cartographic principles;
- Demonstrated ability to work independently (with attention to detail and accuracy), seek assistance and input as required, and to work on interdisciplinary teams;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Field experience and primary data collection an asset;
- Experience with Enterprise GIS an asset.
