We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our people helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act and many of the implementing regulations. Today, our team of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and others work across the United States and the globe from our offices in Bozeman, Montana; Chicago; New York; San Francisco; Santa Monica; Washington, D.C.; and Beijing.

NRDC is seeking a Social Advocacy Manager to work with the Communications team in our New York City or Washington, D.C. office.

Position Summary

We’re looking for a campaigner and social media expert to help drive social content development and strategies that support NRDC’s federal policy advocacy work, nature and public health campaigns, as well manage the day-to-day digital organizing of our social followers. This position will report to the Social Content Director but work closely with teams across the Communications department and organization, including collaborating NRDC’s Campaigns and Digital Advocacy teams on ways to grow membership and increase our reach and influence.

You’ll create and deploy content (paid and organic) that advocates for climate action, embraces NRDC-crafted solutions, and inspires our community of supporters to take action. The ideal candidate is someone who can identify opportunities and innovative ways to raise awareness about and promote solutions for the world’s toughest environmental problems using the power of social media.

Deep knowledge of national politics and environment and public health issues and expertise in social platforms—specifically Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube—are a must. Experience promoting content and running paid ad campaigns on the major social platforms is a plus.
  • Develop social media campaign plans based on solid strategy to achieve political, policy, and audience and performance goals
  • Create organic content and paid content on NRDC’s social accounts
  • Provide hands-on support for NRDC’s social media channels as needed, including creating and monitoring social posts, writing copy, etc.
  • Monitor breaking news and social and cultural conversations, crafting creative and responsive social media content that connects to key NRDC issues in real time
  • Monitor national and international environmental and climate news to inform social content and strategies
  • Provide strategic social media guidance and project management support for advocacy campaigns from start to finish, including project intake, campaign development, content scheduling, launch/execution, quality control, and reporting
  • Work collaboratively with the rest of the social, content, digital advocacy, and campaigns teams to meet audience and engagement goals
  • Produce live social media coverage of on-the-ground events, such as hearings, marches, protests, hearings, speeches, rallies, etc.
  • Coordinate with colleagues from different teams and departments to provide social media guidance to support their work, including training staff and delivering strategy presentations.
  • Have a willingness and ability to travel, work some nights, weekends and holidays as needed in response to breaking news or events.

  • Excellent writing skills with a knack for distilling complicated subject matter into short, compelling copy for a social audience
  • Experience working effectively on multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, organize time, and identify resources for projects as needed.
  • Have a strong understanding of social media platforms for implementing content strategies.
  • Bachelor's degree or greater
  • At least 2 years of experience in a social media or digital campaigner role, preferably at a news organization, political campaign, nimble nonprofit, or agency that requires rapid response capability
  • Strong strategic and tactical editorial skills, honed by previous experience
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple projects and shifting requests
  • Familiarity with creating and launching geo-targeted and paid social media campaigns

We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. For this position, the salary is $70,000 to $80,000. Internal equity considerations will be reviewed before making a final offer.

Since March 2020, NRDC’s offices have been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You will be associated with one of our offices, but until circumstances allow us to re-open, we will continue to support NRDCers with remote working arrangements.
