NRDC is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. NRDC is seeking a Director of Accounting work with the Accounting team in any NRDC office.

The Opportunity
Reporting to the Controller, the Accounting Director will be responsible for the monthly and annual close cycle of the NRDC books as well as the consolidation of NRDC’s US, China, and India entities. This role has oversight of all accounting and associated external and internal reporting activities including the financial statement audit. The Accounting Director serves alongside the Controller as staff liaisons to the Audit Committee and is a key leader in setting the quality standards for the accounting team. Additionally, this role is a thought leader and partner to the Controller and CFO with respect to building a robust internal controls environment, implementing new software technologies for accounting centric functions, and developing processes for effective financial team operations.

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems; ensure compliance with appropriate US GAAP standards and the applicable regulatory requirements, including tax compliance and reporting, as well as those for China and India where NRDC has a presence.
  • Implement consistent accounting policies, practices, and procedures across all programs, upholding federal, state, and local legal standards by remaining knowledgeable about existing, new, and forthcoming legislation and updates to nonprofit accounting guidance relevant to NRDC.
  • Develop and enforce internal controls and safeguards pertaining to the receipt of revenues (donor gifts), costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures and timely manage the month-end and year-end accounting close process with reconciliations, routinely and timely, including all internal and external financial reporting requirements.
  • Ensure work is accurate and is processed in a timely manner and in accordance with NRDC’s policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate all external audit activities (e.g., financial statement, pension, and compliance audits, as applicable, and oversee the preparation of all required tax forms and such other regulatory reports/audits that might be required) to ensure all reporting deadlines are met.

  • Able to partner with the Controller and other senior leaders across the organization to build, implement, and monitor a robust internal controls environment.

Education & Experience
  • Master’s degree in Accounting required
  • Proven experience with full cycle close and financial statement compilations, with at least six years industry experience. At least three years of experience must be in a direct supervisory role.
  • Previous public accounting experience in assurance function is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, regulatory compliance, as well as ability to apply new accounting standards to current operations is required
  • Previous experience leading or being part of an accounting systems implementation team is required
  • CPA license is a plus
  • Previous experience on a large (+$100M annual revenues) nonprofit accounting team or experience with grant management and reporting is a plus
  • Experience with an Accounting close management software (ex. FloQast, Blackline, Planful) is a plus

We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. Internal equity will be reviewed and considered to determine a final offer. For this position, the salary range is $126,000 to $145,000.
