NRDC is seeking a Senior Advisor, Real Estate Finance to work with the Resilient Communities Buildings team.

Position Summary

The Resilient Communities division of the People & Communities program focuses on building and activating partnerships, advancing holistic policies and climate solutions that provide strong health, economic and social benefits, and seeing them through investment and implementation. We aim to support historically underrepresented communities, BIPOC communities, EJ communities, and communities most impacted by climate action and inaction, specifically related to infrastructure, buildings, power, and transportation. We believe to make lasting and far-reaching progress on climate change, we must form inclusive partnerships and coalitions to drive wide-ranging and effective change, explicitly designed to benefit people in the places they work and live.

Resilient Communities’ matrixed team is made up of advocacy, equity, technical, community engagement, and partnership experts who collaborate to advance equitable climate action throughout the country. It includes a Place-Based Integrated Solutions team (PBIS), an Equity, Networks & Partnerships team (ENP), and Center of Excellence (COE) teams for Transportation, Buildings, and Energy.

The Senior Advisor, Real Estate Finance works within the Buildings team in the COE and with the PBIS team to support the achievement of NRDC’s goal to equitably decarbonize America’s buildings by 2050 so that all U.S. residents live and work in fossil-fuel free, affordable, healthy, and grid-friendly buildings. The position works with a team of equitable building decarbonization experts in the Resilient Communities division of the People and Communities program, state and federal policy experts in the Climate and Clean Energy Program, finance experts in the Green Finance Center, and local and national partners to create and advance equitable building decarbonization solutions in cities, states and on the federal scale.
  • Tool, Policy, & Program Development: Develop and advance financing tools, policies, and programs that accelerate equitable decarbonization of all U.S. buildings through collaboration with cities, states, and national and local partners. Work with partners to co-create tools, policies, and programs, develop stakeholder engagement processes, and lead or support advocacy and campaign efforts, with a focus on solutions that can support decarbonization in the subsidized and unsubsidized affordable housing sector.
  • External Partner Relationships: Engage and build relationships with key partners including environmental justice organizations, tenant’s rights advocates, community groups, affordable housing owners and advocates, CDFIs, green banks, housing finance agencies, and other stakeholders to ensure widespread access to zero-emission buildings, particularly for underserved communities.
  • Represent NRDC: Represent NRDC through active participation in coalitions, working groups, and in other forums, providing collaboration and guidance to maximize effectiveness and grow support for necessary solutions. Engage with key regulators and policymakers and secure high-level, strategic opportunities for NRDC or our partners to present policy and regulatory recommendations.
  • Internal Collaboration: Closely coordinate efforts and identify opportunities to collaborate with city, state, and federal-focused equitable building decarbonization experts in the Resilient Communities Division and Climate and Clean Energy Program, climate adaptation and health experts in the Peoples and Communities program, and NRDC’s Green Finance Center.
  • Communications: Promote in the media through blogs, issue papers, responding to media inquiries, public speaking opportunities, and by supporting partners to promote their successes.
  • Materials Development: Contribute to the development of resources for both internal and external audiences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by direct manager or as part of the matrixed Resilient Communities team.

  • Commitment to NRDC’s mission and values.
  • Work and/or educational background in real estate finance or other related field; advanced degree or equivalent work experience preferred.
  • At least 7 years of experience working in real estate financing, affordable housing development, community banking, financial regulation and/or policy.
  • Commitment to equity and financial inclusion.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across groups within an organization and with external partners, including communication in both highly technical and more general terms.
  • Strong project management, planning skills and capacity to handle and prioritize multiple tasks, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Effective presentation style and excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Deep understanding and demonstrated commitment to and competency in racial equity, diversity, and inclusion principles, including contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment and experience with advancing DEI.
  • Advanced finance or economics degree.
  • Experience working on sustainability, climate, and/or energy issues.

We offer competitive salaries,
excellent benefits , and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. For this position, the salary is $130,000 to $156,000. Internal equity considerations will be reviewed before making a final offer.

Since March 2020, NRDC’s offices have been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You will be associated with one of our offices, but until circumstances allow us to re-open, we will continue to support NRDCers with remote working arrangements.
