The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations. Today, our staff of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and others work across the United States and internationally from our offices in New York; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; Santa Monica; San Francisco; Bozeman, Montana; and Beijing.

Position Summary
NRDC is seeking a Finance Analyst to work with the Accounting and Finance team in our New York office.

The Program Finance team is part of the Accounting and Finance Department, which reports to the Chief Financial Officer. The team plays an integral role in overseeing the financial management of NRDC’s grants and supporting the budgets of our advocacy programs. The team also partners closely with the CFO on the overall strategy and management of the finance organization, including managing partnerships with internal stakeholders and leading large-scale, cross-functional strategic, control and infrastructure initiatives that support the long-term financial sustainability of the organization.

The Finance Analyst will report to the Deputy Director, Finance. Key responsibilities include:
  • Manage post award administration functions required to onboard grants onto the Accounting and Finance platforms. Including capturing modifications in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for accurate and timely payroll accounting for grants within assigned programs and related personnel including initiating and posting of salary benefit and indirect distributions
  • Prepares routine journal entries for reclass process.
  • Assist with data gathering for financial reporting and analysis across internal finance and accounting systems.
  • Fields ad-hoc requests from program finance department in a timely fashion, ensuring the availability of information and documentation for audit trail.
  • Assists in the organization’s year end close-out procedures, not limited to preparing and processing reclasses, and providing progress reports.

Departmental Support
  • Assist with compiling agenda and disseminating actionable items from internal departmental meetings
  • Assist with ad hoc analysis including key metric reporting and develop professional power point presentations.
  • Participate in project initiatives led by senior members of the A&F department


  • BA/BS degree required, with in business related discipline, CPA, CMA, or CFA is plus.
  • 0-2 years of accounting or finance experience
  • Grant Management experience is preferred and useful, but not a requirement.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
  • Autonomous self-starter with the ability to exercise independent judgment
  • Analytical ability, methodical approach to problem solving
  • Demonstrated ability to be organized and establish priorities with competing deadlines.
  • Experience working with Excel and PowerPoint skills; ability to use data to develop charts and graphs in Excel and construct presentations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to understand, dissect and analyze data to drive decisions and/or make recommendations.
  • Demonstrates a collaborative and flexible style, with a strong follow-up skill.

We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits , and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. For this position, the salary is $55,000 to $65,000.

Since March 2020, NRDC’s offices have been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You will be associated with one of our offices, but until circumstances allow us to re-open, we will continue to support NRDCers with remote working arrangements.
