Overview:
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations. Today, our staff of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and others work across the United States and internationally from our offices in New York; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; Santa Monica; San Francisco; Bozeman, Montana; and Beijing.

Position Summary:

NRDC is seeking a Program Assistant to work in the Climate and Clean Energy program in our Chicago office. This is an administrative position. The Program Assistant will provide administrative support to the Midwest Climate & Clean Energy team in a variety of capacities, including budget and grants management, invoice and contracts processing, scheduling of internal and external meeting, making travel arrangements, performing basic research, and proofreading and preparing written materials.

Since March 2020, NRDC’s offices have been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Until circumstances allow us to fully re-open, we will continue to support staff with remote working arrangements. Upon formal re-opening, fully-remote arrangements are not guaranteed and will be (i) limited and (ii) based on institutional objectives.
Responsibilities:
  • Managing project budget and allocation to grants, tracking expenses;
  • Organizing and manipulating budget data in Excel, including pivot tables;
  • Scheduling (and at times facilitating) internal and external meetings;
  • Coordinating travel arrangements, including logistics and conference registrations;
  • Completing monthly expense reports, processing invoices and contracts;
  • Conducting basic research;
  • Editing, formatting, and proofreading documents and presentations;
  • Assisting with the development and/or drafting of blogs and reports;
  • Providing general administrative support and help with ad hoc and institutional projects as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree required;
  • 2 years previous administrative experience or equivalent is preferred;
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, organize and coordinate multiple tasks, set priorities, follow organizational procedures, and perform quickly and accurately under deadlines;
  • Attention to detail, including strong proofreading skills (a proofreading test will be given for second round interviews);
  • Excellent time-management skills;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Willingness to be available for occasional paid overtime work;
  • Must possess a high degree of proficiency with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook;

We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and commensurate with skills and experience. Salary is $55,000. Salary may be higher as appropriate for the selected candidate, with internal equity considerations taken into account.
