NRDC is seeking a Clean Power Grid Advocate to work with the Climate & Clean Energy Program's Sustainable FERC Project team in our Chicago office or remotely, if within the Midwest region.

Position Summary
NRDC is seeking an Advocate to work with the Climate & Clean Energy Program’s Sustainable FERC Project (Project) team on our transmission and wholesale power markets advocacy. This person’s primary responsibility will be to advocate at the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) and the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) in favor of reforms to wholesale markets and transmission planning processes to maximize renewable and clean energy expansion and accelerate the clean energy transition. As necessary, they will also advocate at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and in other forums and stakeholder processes. The Advocate also will work closely with the Project’s coalition partners.
Responsibilities:
  • Represent the Project coalition and NRDC at MISO, SPP, and as necessary in select other proceedings and forums.
  • Conceive and advocate for markets and transmission solutions necessary to expeditiously bring clean energy online to meet climate goals, improve grid reliability, and reduce energy costs.
  • Draft technical and regulatory comments.
  • Participate and lead stakeholder meetings and other activities necessary to accomplish our advocacy goals.
  • Maintain and build durable coalitions with, among others, state, regional and national environmental and other public interest organizations.”.
  • Write blog posts and other editorial content; respond to media inquiries.
Qualifications:
Required
  • Commitment to NRDC’s mission and values.
  • Significant experience with power markets, electricity sector regulation, and/or FERC (experience with clean energy or climate-related policies, particularly pertaining to policy implementation, is preferred).
  • Excellent writing and policy analysis skills and the ability to grasp and translate technical power grid issues into plain English.
  • Oral advocacy skills and experience; and comfort speaking in varied settings, including with media.
  • Well-developed organizational skills and proven ability to manage projects and relationships.
  • Commitment to NRDC’s values and mission.
  • Commitment to incorporating and growing the use of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion principles in NRDC’s work.
  • When conditions allow, a willingness to travel (estimated up to 15% of the time).
  • Is an expert within the area of power markets rules and tariffs, and capable of proactively addressing complex problems with a strategic view of solutions.
  • Ability to both work independently with guidance necessary only in the most complex issues, and also to lead teams and work collaboratively towards shared outcomes.

We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. For this position, the salary range is $125,000-$140,000. Internal equity considerations will be reviewed before making a final offer.

Since March 2020, NRDC’s offices have been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You will be associated with one of our offices, but until circumstances allow us to re-open, we will continue to support NRDCers with remote working arrangements.
