Overview:
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations. Today, our staff of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and others work across the United States and internationally from our offices in New York; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; Santa Monica; San Francisco; Bozeman, Montana; and Beijing.

Position Summary:
NRDC is seeking an Advocate to work with the Climate & Clean Energy Program’s Sustainable FERC Project (Project) team in our Chicago office. This person will advocate primarily at the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) in favor of reforms to wholesale markets and planning processes to maximize renewable and clean energy expansion and accelerate the clean energy transition. The Advocate also may advocate at the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and in other forums and stakeholder processes. The Advocate also will work closely with the Project’s coalition partners.

Since March 2020, NRDC’s offices have been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Until circumstances allow us to fully re-open, we will continue to support staff with remote working arrangements. Upon formal re-opening, fully-remote arrangements are not guaranteed and will be (i) limited and (ii) based on institutional objectives.
Responsibilities:
  • Conceive and advocate for transmission planning and markets solutions necessary to expeditiously bring clean energy online to meet climate goals, improve grid reliability, and reduce energy costs.
  • Represent the Project coalition and NRDC at MISO, SPP, FERC, and in other proceedings and forums.
  • Draft technical and regulatory comments.
  • Participate in stakeholder meetings and conferences and other activities necessary to accomplish our advocacy goals.
  • Engage in related advocacy with states, cities, members of Congress, and other decisionmakers and stakeholders.
  • Maintain and build durable coalitions.
  • Write blog posts and other editorial content.
Qualifications:
This position calls for a combination of leadership and written and oral advocacy skills coupled with the flexibility, diplomacy, organizational and communication skills necessary for successful collaboration across teams and organizations. Experience with wholesale power markets, electricity sector regulation, and/or FERC is desirable.
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in economics or other relevant field (graduate-level degree preferred).
  • 2 to 7 years of relevant work experience in business, energy or environmental field.
  • Experience with clean energy or climate-related policies, particularly pertaining to policy implementation (experience with power markets, electricity sector regulation, and FERC is preferred).
  • Excellent writing and policy analysis skills and the ability to grasp and translate technical power grid issues into plain English.
  • Oral advocacy skills and experience; and comfort speaking in varied settings, including with media.
  • Strategic thinking and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to participate in teams that work collaboratively towards shared outcomes.
  • Well-developed organizational skills and proven ability to manage projects and relationships. · Commitment to NRDC’s values and mission.

  • When conditions allow, a willingness to travel (estimated up to 15% of the time).
