Job Description
The Molecular Biology and Biophysics group at NREL aims to provide a fundamental understanding of biophysical processes across different length and time scales to enable the development of the next generation of biomanufacturing (biocatalytic and chemoenzymatic). This team is looking to hire interns for a 12-month internship to work on the following:
  • Conducting the set-up and execution of laboratory experiments such as protein expression, purification, characterization, and enzymatic assays
  • Preparing growth media, buffer stocks, DNA cloning and transformation, conducting gel electrophoresis, evaluating enzyme kinetics, and prepping liquid handling robots
  • Working alongside researchers on high throughput enzyme engineering campaigns to enable the production of renewable biofuels and biochemicals
  • Communicating effectively with mentors and other laboratory members about the expected work, progress toward completing that work, and any issues that arise
  • This internship will involve extensive time in a laboratory environment, and it is essential for the selected candidate to support a safe and efficient work environment

Basic Qualifications
Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Candidates who have earned a degree may work for a period not to exceed 12 months. Must have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Additional Required Qualifications
  • Current enrollment or recent graduation from a bachelor’s or master’s degree in biochemistry, biology, microbiology, chemical engineering, biophysics, chemistry or related field
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience in each of the following:
    • DNA cloning
    • Enzymatic assays
    • Preparing growth media and buffer stocks
    • Conducting gel electrophoresis
    • Running fermentations
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using python
  • Demonstrated experience using and/or programming liquid handling robots
  • Experience with high performance computers, Linux systems

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $50,200 - $80,300
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. Benefits Summary

NREL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions.
