Job Description
This position is part of the Scientific Publishing section in NREL’s Communications Office and will be responsible for producing and releasing electronic and print publications for NREL and its partners, including the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). This includes providing publishing assistance to NREL staff and ensuring that NREL prime contract, NREL publishing procedure, and U.S. government printing rules and regulations are met. The position requires in-depth working knowledge of both electronic and print document production. It will involve converting native files (Word, PowerPoint, InDesign) into Section 508 compliant PDFs for distribution. It will also involve updating and releasing records using NREL's Publishing Tracker software and ensuring all proper documentation exists for publications prior to release.
General responsibilities will include:
  • Production and release of electronic and print publications.
  • Provide advanced technical assistance and help troubleshoot complex formatting and template issues in Word and PowerPoint.
  • Remediation of documents to ensure compliance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • Work with clients to manage document revisions, review proofs, and finalize documents for publication.
  • Ensure that all required reviews and approvals, as outlined in the NREL Publishing Procedure, are completed before release.
  • Update and manage records in the publishing database.
  • Distribute products through established distribution systems including NREL Document Distribution, Government Printing Office Depository Program, etc.
  • Participate in Scientific Publishing meetings.

Basic Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Full knowledge of specialized focused business support functions. Complete understanding of the general and detailed aspects of the business support activities, and their practical applications to problems and situations ordinarily encountered. Fully competent in applicable software packages and office equipment. Demonstrated project administration skills. Full knowledge of specific principles, procedures and practices related to supported fields and disciplines. Strong written and verbal communication skills, team and interpersonal skills.
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Advanced proficiency with Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  • Working experience developing and updating MS Word templates.
  • Demonstrated success managing customer relationships.
  • Good collaborative, team, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects of varying size and complexity.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, detail-oriented environment, while consistently maintaining a high-quality standard.
  • Database knowledge and data entry experience.
  • Good communicator with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with good proofreading and spelling skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of WCAG 2.0/Section 508 accessibility standards and best practices, and experience with remediation.
  • Knowledge of LaTeX and/or InDesign.
  • Working experience in a research or technical organization.
  • Publishing, printing, library and/or records experience.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Specialist III / Annual Salary Range: $49,100 - $78,600
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
