Job Description
NREL’s Hydrogen Production & Storage Systems Group is seeking an early career researcher to support existing programs in hydrogen safety, codes, and standards. The group mission is to support safe hydrogen technology deployment and acceleration into the marketplace, de-risking technologies and hydrogen systems, integration of hydrogen assets into complex hybrid energy systems, and enabling prevalent end uses of hydrogen in alignment with the Department of Energy’s H2@Scale initiative.
This position will support existing projects that include detailed analysis of hydrogen safety codes and standards and consult on design and siting for new build projects and existing infrastructure. Other dwill include hydrogen component reliability analysis, and database analytics. The successful candidate will be detail oriented with strong documentation skills.
Duties Include:
  • Design site layout of H2 systems including generation, storage, and end use.
  • Interpret detailed safety codes and their applications to novel technology site designs.
  • Perform database analytics on hydrogen system performance data, failure data, and hydrogen detection systems.
  • Gain knowledge of hydrogen safety codes and support code development for new applications in production, storage, transportation, and end use.
  • Interface with internal and limited external partners
  • Perform work independently and in cooperation with other team members.
  • Follow all ES&H policies and procedures to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Document and track results through regular internal and external reports and publications.

Basic Qualifications
Relevant Bachelor's Degree . Limited use and application of scientific principles, theories and concepts. Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Data analytics experience (MATLAB, Python, C++, or other).
  • Proficient in detailed documentation.
  • Ability to work well in a team.
  • Ability to balance work between multiple projects.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong analytic and writing skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of safety codes and standards for hydrogen systems

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
