Job Introduction

We have an exciting opportunity for an Overhead Line Electricity Distribution Network Technician to join our Major Projects Maintenance team, based in Tipton. This is a critical operational role, supporting the construction, maintenance, and repair of the West Midlands overhead electricity network up to and including 132kV.

Reporting into the Operations/Team Manager you’ll be responsible for the delivery of safe and efficient work on the 33kV and 132kV steel tower overhead line network. You’ll take ownership of day-to-day site activities, including the planning and coordination of work, supervising and monitoring the performance of your team, carrying out switching up to 132kV, and issuing the appropriate safety documentation. Your expertise will be central to maintaining network integrity and ensuring all work is delivered to the highest safety and quality standards.

You are required to have grade A*-C/4-9 GCSE in English and Maths or Functional Skills Level 2 qualification in both subjects. In addition, you must hold a City & Guilds 2339 Level 2 or equivalent Level 2 qualification in Electrical Engineering. Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment.

Depending on experience, you may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

Main Responsibilities

Reporting To The Major Projects Operations Manager, You Will

  • Issue appropriate safety documentation and ensure all activities comply with relevant safety standards.
  • Take responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of colleagues, contractors, and members of the public.
  • Manage allocated jobs in accordance with company policies, procedures, and operational requirements.
  • Follow work instructions to deliver projects efficiently, on time, and within budget.
  • Liaise with a range of stakeholders to support safe, effective, and successful project outcomes.
  • Mentor and support trainees and apprentices, helping to develop their skills and technical knowledge.
  • Carry out additional tasks appropriate to the Technician role as required.

Ideal Candidate

You will be a self‑motivated individual who is comfortable working on your own initiative as well as part of a small, collaborative team. You will be confident making on‑the‑spot decisions, able to communicate clearly, and capable of working under pressure to tight deadlines.

You Will Have

  • Level 2 City & Guilds 2339 (essential)
  • Level 3 City & Guilds qualification, or a willingness to undertake this if not already attained
  • Proven overhead lines experience, ideally within a DNO, transmission or major projects environment
  • Experience working on steel tower (pylon) infrastructure (strongly preferred)
  • Competence in receiving and working under permits on pylons
  • Switching experience, ideally up to 132KV, or working towards relevant authorisations
  • Qualified as a Senior Authorised Person up 132KV or willingness to achieve this authorisation
  • A full, valid UK/EU driving licence and mobility across the area.
  • Computer literacy, with the ability to use digital tools and systems effectively.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with a variety of stakeholders.
  • A flexible and proactive approach, adapting well to changing priorities.
  • Flexibility to undertake standby duties as operational needs require.
