Protection Specialist
Job Introduction
An opportunity is available for a Protection Specialist based at Swansea Plant team. You will be accountable to the Operations Manager for the provision of protection services to your own and other teams.
The successful candidate is required to hold a Level 3 City & Guilds 2339 and if not already attained will be required to undertake HNC Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment.
Main Responsibilities
Experience in maintenance and commissioning of 33kV and 11kV protection schemes along with a good understanding of organisational systems, processes, and procedures .
You will have proficient negotiation and influencing skills and you must be able to demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
You will need to be mobile throughout the area and a flexible attitude is essential as you may be asked to undertake other duties to assist the team in meeting its objectives.
Operationally we require you to live within approximately 45 minutes of the depot you are applying for.
The role will involve undertaking standby duties and operational authorisations, and relevant experience would be beneficial

Main Responsibilities
- Install commission and maintain complex protection systems.
- Advise own and other team members on protection activities.
- Identify training needs of employees and provide training as necessary in protection related matters.
- Liaise with other protection specialists within the Company.
- Introduce new protection techniques and methods.
- Train appropriate staff on the operational aspects of protection.
- Keep abreast of protection system developments.
- Select and procure protection test equipment.
- Investigate and report on protection related system incidents.
- Determine what will be done in the short term (immediate to one month) within known constraints.
- Carry out network operations including the issue of safety documents up to 66kV.
- Commission and install automation equipment
- Fault location
- Determine what is required and how the work will be carried out.
- Issue planned shutdown notices, make appointments with customers.
- Exercise leadership.
- Request assistance when outside capability or authority.
- Alter own short term programme to meet changes in circumstances, within constraints.
- Assess the potential impact of a specific work activity on customers.
- Minimise the adverse impact of own activities on customers.
