An opportunity has arisen for a DSO Curtailment Engineer to join the Curtailment Team within Distribution System Operator (DSO). The DSO Curtailment Team is responsible for the production of curtailment reports, publication of curtailment input data and the provision of online self-serve tools to our customers. You will be based at either Bristol, Cardiff, Tipton or Castle Donington.

This role reports to the DSO Curtailment Manager within the DSO System Models & Data department.

As part of our hybrid working approach this role offers a mix of office and home working. Hybrid working can only be considered once your initial training is complete and subject to business need.

  • Please note the successful candidate may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

Main Responsibilities

  • Conduct analysis to determine the level of curtailment for customers connected to National Grid Electricity Distribution's network, and to provide curtailment reports
  • Support the development of automated curtailment analysis tooling, ensuring it meets the needs of our customers and internal teams
  • Engage with stakeholders on curtailment and be the central business subject matter expert, providing clear technical guidance to Field Operations and Engineering Policy
  • Improve datasets available on our DSO Data Portal that enable customers to undertake their own curtailment analysis
  • Collaborate with agile IT&D scrum teams to build and develop external curtailment tooling (e.g. Curtailment Estimator)
  • Liaise with internal teams to ensure effective integration with business tools and processes
  • Proactively working with the data owners and maintainers to continually improve data quality, accuracy and system integration

Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate should be self-motivated, inquisitive and demonstrate a clear knowledge of the principles and challenges associated with distribution network design, load management schemes (i.e. Active Network Management) and network curtailment.

An electrical engineering degree or similar STEM qualification is required and evidence of your qualification certificates will be required prior to appointment.

The ability to present information in a clear and reasoned way, together with an open yet analytical approach to problem solving, and good computer skills are essential to the role.

The successful candidate will be process driven and have a focus on data quality and an ‘automate-first’ approach to enable effective management of and development of the secondary network modelling capability.

Programming and data management experience, particularly in Python and SQL would be extremely beneficial. Proficiency with power systems & modelling techniques is highly advantageous. An understanding of the new connection process and operation of ANM systems would be very helpful.

You must be reliable, well organised and be able to work effectively as part of a small team and able to work using your own initiative.

You will engage with internal and external stakeholders on a regular basis, so strong communication skills are crucial. You will proactively identify opportunities to improve the existing process and work closely with the wider business to develop and implement new strategies.

We may consider applicants who do not currently hold all the necessary skills to carry out the role, but have the confidence and ability to reach the required standard with training.
