Job Introduction

An opportunity is available for two Operator (Substation Fitter’s) based at Birmingham.

As an Operator, you will assist the Craftsperson with general site work associated with the repair, maintenance and construction of plant and switchgear up to 66KV.

In addition, you will be required to undertake substation inspections, drive an HGV or fork lift truck, inspect plant and ancillary equipment, rectify minor defects, carry out site repairs, paint plant, test and rectify earthing, trim and fell trees and lay plinths for switchgear and surrounds. Some electrical or civil repairs / maintenance experience would be an advantage, however full training will be given.

To apply, you will need to hold English & Maths GCSE (1-9/G-A*) or equivalent qualification deemed to be at the same level in these subjects, such as Functional Skills. Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment.

National Grid Electricity Distribution is committed to safeguarding the interests of the Company, colleagues and customers. This role is subject to a satisfactory Barring Service, (DBS) check, depending on the role different levels of screening and vetting are required. Some roles require a triannual check.

Main Responsibilities

The work involves being away from the depot, normally working in a team of two people. The environment requires you to be able to react quickly, decisively and responsibly. You will also need to be flexible in your approach to assist the team in meeting its objectives. The role is suitable for someone who enjoys the demands of a physical outdoor environment.

Ideal Candidate

You will need to be mobile throughout the area as you may also be required to undertake out of hours standby duties, therefore a full driving license is required.

Potential candidates should be aware that for some of the National Grid positions that require working at height, or use fall arrest devices, there is an upper weight limit 135kg due to maximum safe working load of the safety equipment that is used.
