Reporting directly to the Head of GWEND and alongside the other NESO teams working on gas, hydrogen or multi-vector workstreams, the role will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to work in a multi-paced, multi-faceted team structure that goes to the core of NESO's whole system responsibilities and therefore must grapple with some of the most significant decisions society has to make.
GWEND are responsible for planning both the gas transmission network and the hydrogen system that Britain might need to develop and GWEND is part of the Strategic Energy Planning directorate which is tasked with planning the future for Britain’s electricity, gas and hydrogen systems. The Head of GWEND also provides support to wider NESO teams working on emerging whole system topics – notably in the Resilience and Emergency Management, Markets and the Strategy and Policy directorates.
The role will require working and networking with Senior Managers and their teams across NESO to develop research and analysis. There will be the need for interfacing with DESNZ and Ofgem and other stakeholders and customers. With this comes the opportunity to grow a broad range of skills, as well as an opportunity to gain knowledge of the whole system energy transition and to build your network within NESO.
This role is based in Warwick, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

Key Accountabilities
Under the direction of the Head of GWEND:
- Being responsible and accountable for providing analytical support to the teams within GWEND including the including the Data Science team, the Hydrogen and Gas Network Analysis teams, and the Network Engineering team.
- Ensuring that relevant research, analytical activity and horizons and gaps in NESO’s knowledge are identified, that proactive and high-quality research and analysis of disparate elements of the energy system and of energy transition is undertaken and progressed. Example topics could include biomethane and land use, the NTS exit capacity process, hydrogen blending, gas storage economics.
- Distiling the research and analyses into readily digestible reports, recommendations, messages and presentation materials, translating complex and technical information into easily understandable messaging for internal, external and non-technical audiences.
- Forging strong and credible relationships with internal stakeholders across all business areas, encouraging collaboration and a holistic approach to insight development whilst avoiding the creation of silos.
- Building relationships with a wide-range of external stakeholders in fields relating to your background and expertise – including political entities, institutions, regulatory bodies, and industry players.
- Being responsible for and ensuring compliance to the team's programme management and governance structure.
- Working with relevant teams (PMO, Customer, Data & Digital, etc.) to ensure all GWEND reporting obligations are met - CRM, governance, risk, etc., and that all relevant risks are kept under review.

- A deep technical knowledge of one or more energy vector, or general knowledge of the energy system, decarbonisation, sustainability, economics and/or politics.
- An understanding of the ‘whole energy’ system – with experience in one of the energy vectors (gas and/or electricity networks, heat decarbonisation, hydrogen, transport decarbonisation, storage/flex etc).
- Excellent and proven analytical, organisational and communication skills. Fastidious attention to detail and rigorous organisation.
- Strong and resilient time management and project management skills and a disciplined attitude to organisation.
- Proven experience in building and managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work in line with changing priorities.
- A curiosity to understand the bigger picture, the ‘so what’, and to understand the possibilities
- Experience as a management consultant will be a distinct advantage.
- Knowledge of PowerBI and/or Thinkcell would be advantageous, but not essential.
