About The Role

National Energy System Operator (NESO) recognises the potential of bright and talented individuals, and we encourage you to join us as Great Britain’s energy system undergoes an ambitious, exciting, and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

These are exciting times at NESO, particularly for the CFO function. Having become an independent public sector organisation in October 2024, we’ve been building and shaping our function, and its culture, ever since.

We recognise the value of in-house specialists, so we’re looking to expand our Tax team to support our tax compliance objectives. Whether you’re an expert in VAT or passionate about corporation tax, we’re a small team where you can demonstrate your expertise and learn new stuff too, whilst helping NESO optimise its tax arrangements.

You don’t need to be an expert in Energy, although it’s an interesting sector to work in and you’ll learn loads when you get here. You also don’t need to have Public Sector experience. What’s most important is that your own values align with that of NESO and that you have tax expertise you can share to support the team.

This role is based in Warwick, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to flexible working arrangements, which can be discussed as part of the recruitment process.

Key Accountabilities

  • Supporting the Senior Tax Manager in ensuring adherence to NESO’s Tax Policy.
  • Maintaining appropriate tax governance policies and processes, to identify and minimise tax risk for NESO.
  • Helping to move the CFO function towards becoming fully digital.
  • Building strong relationships across NESO, acting as a trusted advisor on tax matters to the Business, especially our Regulation team.
  • Assisting the Senior Tax Manager in maintaining good external relationships with HMRC, DESNZ and Ofgem in relation to tax matters, including responding directly to enquiries from HMRC.
  • Supporting the provision of tax-specific information for the notes to the Annual Report & Accounts, ensuring accurate representation of NESO’s tax position.
  • Assisting with creating new processes for our tax compliance, taking advantage of the capabilities of our new ‘Workday’ ERP system.
  • Operating effective controls around all aspects of the tax process, suggesting and help in implementing any continuous improvement opportunities, to optimise NESO’s tax compliance.
  • Helping manage any outsourced contracts, although these will be small, given our desire to have the expertise in-house.

Applicants must have the right to work in the UK by the start of employment. Visa sponsorship may not be available for this role and will be considered in line with business requirements.

About You

We’re forging the path, and we know we can’t do it alone. That’s why we need dedicated individuals like you to join us on this transformative journey. In this case, we’re looking for someone who has/is:

  • Chartered Tax Association (CTA) qualification (active membership required), or relevant accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA) would be desirable.
  • Evidenced post qualification experience in UK tax, either VAT, corporation tax, employment taxes or a combination of them.
  • The ability to effectively communicate technical aspects of tax to a wider audience.
  • Strong stakeholder management and interpersonal skills, to enable effective working relationships internally and externally.
  • Displays a ‘can-do’ attitude, looking for continuous improvement opportunities to help the CFO function become fully digital.
