About the role

The National Energy System Operator (NESO) is responsible for establishing an overarching strategic energy plan for Great Britian. The plan will set out what energy infrastructure is needed, and where and when it needs to be delivered, in order to help achieve local and national ambitions for economic growth and net zero. As part of this responsibility, NESO has been given an exciting new Regional Energy Strategic Planning (RESP) role.

RESP is focused on the energy distribution networks. These networks deliver electricity and gas to homes and businesses across Great Britian. By moving to the new RESP approach to planning these networks, this will help ensure that local communities get the energy infrastructure they need, where and when they need it.

RESP will produce bespoke regional energy strategic plans for Scotland, Wales and nine English regions. These plans will be underpinned by local needs and data, and extensive engagement with local actors. As a result, RESP will help ensure that local areas can build new developments with access to the energy they need, local renewable energy projects can get network connections when they need them, and homes and business can make the shift to electric vehicles, heat pumps and solar panels when they’re ready.

This role sits in the RESP Engagement and Communications team. The team is responsible for developing and coordinating the delivery of the RESP engagement and communications strategy. The team forms part of two wider teams. The RESP team, providing the strategic direction and day-to-day support to ensure a consistent and outcomes-focused approach to stakeholder engagement and communications.

It also forms part of the Strategic Energy Planning Engagement team, to ensure that RESP engagement is joined up and coordinated with the directorate’s wider engagement activities. The team also works closely with NESO’s Corporate Affairs directorate, ensuring a consistent, one-NESO approach to stakeholder engagement.

As one of two RESP Senior Engagement Coordinator – Nations and Regions roles, you will be responsible for supporting either the five northern or six southern RESP nations and regions. A list of the eleven nations and regions is available on the NESO website.

This role can be based our Warwick, Wokingham or Glasgow office or you can be home-based until we have established a new office that is convenient for you. We continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

About The National Energy System Operator (NESO)

In Autumn of 2024, the ESO transitioned to National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator is the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain’s electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.

The ESO, including all of its existing roles, are now at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users’ need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.

The organisation is set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As was the ESO, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.

The time to deliver is now. As part of our team, you won’t just be touching the lives of almost everyone in Great Britain – you’ll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.
