The HVAC Lab Technician supports the development and testing of commercial HVAC systems. This hands-on role involves system assembly, brazing, refrigerant charging, test setup, data collection, and material handling. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical aptitude, HVAC system knowledge, and experience in a test lab or manufacturing environment.

Job Summary
The HVAC Lab Technician supports the development and testing of commercial HVAC systems. This hands-on role involves system assembly, brazing, refrigerant charging, test setup, data collection, and material handling. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical aptitude, HVAC system knowledge, and experience in a test lab or manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assemble and build HVAC prototypes, including ductwork, copper piping, and mechanical subassemblies.
- Perform brazing and soldering on refrigerant and water lines according to engineering specifications.
- Charge, evacuate, and recover refrigerant in test systems using proper HVAC tools and gauges.
- Set up and monitor HVAC systems under test, including temperature sensors, pressure gauges, and data acquisition equipment.
- Assist engineers in executing test plans, modifying setups, and troubleshooting performance issues.
- Operate forklifts and other material handling equipment to move test units and components.
- Build, seal, and insulate custom ductwork or air paths as required for lab testing scenarios.
- Maintain clean, organized workstations and ensure safe lab operations at all times.
- Follow all company, EPA, and safety protocols for refrigerant handling, electrical safety, and heavy equipment.
- Maintain accurate logs and records of test setups, changes, and material usage.
- High school diploma or GED required; technical diploma or HVAC training certificate preferred.
- Minimum 1–3 years of hands-on experience in HVAC assembly, testing, or field service.
- Proficient in brazing, leak checking, and using tools like vacuum pumps, micron gauges, and refrigerant scales.
- Familiarity with refrigerants such as R-410A, R-134a, R-515b, R454b, or R-1234yf.
- Able to read technical drawings, schematics, and work instructions.
- Comfortable with material handling, heavy lifting (50+ lbs), and working in a physically demanding environment.
- Forklift certification or experience preferred.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and time management skills.
- EPA 608 Certification (Type II or Universal)
- Experience in a product development lab or HVAC manufacturing facility
- Basic data entry or familiarity with test data systems (LabVIEW, Excel, etc.)
- Electrical troubleshooting skills or experience wiring control panels
- Indoor test lab environment with occasional exposure to heat, cold, noise, and moving equipment.
- Requires PPE such as gloves, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, and respirators when brazing.
- Fast-paced setting with shifting priorities based on development cycles.
