Senior Lead, Carbon Markets & Project Underwriting
MOTHER Carbon is building technology and analytical capabilities to help make high-quality carbon-removal projects more financeable.
Carbon-removal projects face a difficult financing problem. Capital is often required years before projects generate verified outcomes and receive the corresponding revenue. Meanwhile, lenders and investors must evaluate complex technical, commercial and regulatory risks in a rapidly evolving market.
MOTHER is working to address this challenge by bringing together rigorous research, financial analysis, project evidence and new technology.
We are looking for a Senior Lead, Carbon Markets & Project Underwriting to help develop the analytical and commercial foundations of this work.
This is a hands-on role for someone who understands carbon markets, can evaluate projects from both technical and financial perspectives, and is comfortable building new systems in an early-stage venture.
You will work closely with the Founder and technical team, helping translate complex market realities into disciplined assessments, practical frameworks and scalable products.
Your mandate- Evaluate carbon-removal projects across technical feasibility, commercial viability, financial performance and delivery risk.
- Develop robust underwriting methodologies and project assessment frameworks.
- Analyse project economics, capital requirements, cash flows, financing structures and potential repayment capacity.
- Build and review financial models, including scenario analysis, debt sizing, debt service coverage ratios and sensitivity testing.
- Assess carbon-credit revenue assumptions, offtake arrangements, pricing structures and counterparty exposure.
- Examine project documentation, technical evidence, verification arrangements and commercial contracts.
- Identify material risks, unsupported assumptions and gaps in project evidence.
- Follow developments in carbon markets, methodologies, registries, standards and relevant regulation.
- Contribute specialist expertise to the development of MOTHER Intelligence and associated analytical tools.
- Work with engineers to translate underwriting requirements into structured software workflows.
- Develop research, investment cases and clear recommendations for internal and external stakeholders.
- Help establish analytical standards, quality controls and review processes as the venture grows.
- Contribute to the development of a specialist team over time.
We are particularly interested in candidates with approximately 5–10 years of relevant experience, although demonstrated capability matters more than a fixed number of years.
You may have worked in project finance, infrastructure investment, climate finance, carbon markets, structured finance, investment analysis, technical due diligence or a related discipline.
You should be comfortable evaluating projects where technical performance, contractual arrangements and financial outcomes are closely connected.
Strong candidates will bring:
- Experience assessing projects, businesses or investments through financial modelling and commercial analysis.
- A sound understanding of project finance fundamentals, including cash-flow modelling, financing structures, debt sizing and downside risk.
- The ability to critically evaluate assumptions, evidence and supporting documentation.
- Familiarity with carbon-credit markets, carbon-removal technologies or environmental commodity markets.
- Strong analytical writing and the ability to communicate complex findings clearly.
- The judgement to distinguish a promising project from one that is genuinely ready for financing.
- The independence to challenge assumptions and reach defensible conclusions.
Experience with carbon-removal project development, carbon-credit procurement, project verification or carbon-market transactions would be particularly valuable.
Familiarity with registries and standards such as Puro.earth, Isometric and Verra would also be useful.
We are interested in candidates who understand the practical challenges of additionality, permanence, monitoring, reporting and verification, delivery risk and carbon-credit offtake.
You do not need to have worked across every carbon-removal pathway. Depth of understanding, sound judgement and the ability to learn quickly matter more.
How you workYou are comfortable operating in an early-stage venture where processes are still being developed and substantial ownership is expected.
You can move between detailed financial analysis, commercial judgement, research and product development.
You are rigorous without becoming unnecessarily bureaucratic.
You understand that sophisticated software and AI can accelerate the collection and organisation of information, but that important underwriting decisions still require expert judgement, transparent assumptions and accountable review.
You can work independently, communicate clearly with technical and non-technical colleagues, and turn complex problems into practical solutions.
Why MOTHERThis is an opportunity to help shape a new technology venture at the intersection of climate finance, carbon markets and applied intelligence.
Rather than joining an established underwriting function, you will help determine how that function should operate, how its standards are developed and how its expertise can be incorporated into scalable technology.
The role offers significant responsibility, direct collaboration with the founding team and the opportunity to contribute to a sector where better financial infrastructure could make a meaningful difference.
What this role is notThis is not primarily a carbon-credit sales or brokerage role.
It is not a conventional sustainability reporting position.
The central responsibility is to develop rigorous, commercially informed assessments of projects and help build the analytical infrastructure that supports them.
Compensation and practical termsWorking model: Remote.
Employment: Full-time.
Cash compensation: Competitive.
Long-term participation: Meaningful venture-specific participation may be available where applicable and will be separately and formally documented.
Expected start: As soon as practical.
