Head of Major Projects

Salary: We offer competitive salary based on experience and ability to meet the job requirements.

Location: Flexible with hybrid working pattern

Mitie Power & Grid is entering an exciting new phase of growth following the acquisitions of G2 Energy and ESM Power. As part of a strategic integration programme, the business is bringing these two high-voltage delivery organisations together under a newly formed Major Projects function, creating a more scalable and unified platform to deliver critical infrastructure projects that support the UK's transition to a decarbonised energy network. This newly established division is expected to become a key driver of future growth, with ambitions to increase turnover from £100 million to £200 million over the next three years.

Reporting directly to the Managing Director of Power & Grid, the Head of Major Projects will take full P&L responsibility for the combined £100 million business, leading a multidisciplinary team of 30-35 professionals across design, engineering, and project delivery. The role will oversee the successful execution of major high-voltage grid connections, battery energy storage (BESS) and balance-of-plant projects, while driving operational excellence, governance, and cultural alignment across the integrated business. With significant Board visibility, direct involvement in strategic growth initiatives, and potential succession opportunities into the Managing Director position, this is a rare opportunity to shape the future of one of the UK's most ambitious energy infrastructure businesses, backed by the scale and financial strength of a FTSE 250 organisation.

Main Duties

This role can be based flexibly, with regular travel expected between Milton Keynes, Hull, and London. It requires a commercially astute, operationally strong leader with a proven track record in delivering major high-voltage (HV) infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will bring the clarity, leadership presence, and delivery discipline required to unify two high-performing businesses under a single operating model, while enabling future growth and scalability.

You will bring:

  • Extensive experience of senior leadership experience in the delivery of complex, high-voltage grid connection or power infrastructure projects typically valued at £10 million and above.
  • A strong commercial mindset, with full P&L responsibility in a contractor or Independent Connection Provider (ICP) setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate or scale multi-site operations, embedding governance, cultural alignment, and consistent delivery standards.
  • A credible background leading teams across design, estimating, project delivery, and governance, ideally in highly regulated, high-compliance environments.
  • Experience operating within a UK-wide infrastructure context, with the ability to work across internal functions such as finance, HR, PMO, and health and safety.
  • Deep understanding of major project environments, including battery energy storage systems (BESS), renewable grid connections, substations, and transmission infrastructure.
  • The ability to lead and motivate delivery teams, including 3 to 4 Project Directors managing major works, and around 30 to 35 direct and indirect reports.
  • A delivery-first mindset that balances strategic thinking/oversight with pragmatic, hands-on leadership (Regular site visits and client/operator collaboration).
  • The resilience, judgement, and credibility to influence within a PLC structure while maintaining an agile, entrepreneurial culture at the delivery level.
  • Ensures that responsibilities and commitments are clearly defined and delivered. Establishes expectations, outcomes, and performance standards while providing guidance and support to enable success. Monitors progress consistently, gives timely feedback, and addresses challenges or gaps constructively. Encourages ownership and responsibility across the team, fostering a culture of reliability, transparency, and high performance, while modelling accountability through personal actions
  • A growth-oriented leadership style, focused on driving performance, team development, and cultural integration.
  • Long-term leadership potential, with the capability to step into broader divisional responsibilities over time.
