India Programme Associate

MPP – ITA

Location: New Delhi, India (hybrid)

Reports to: India Country Lead, Mission Possible Partnership

Term: Fixed-term, 6-month contract (initial contract subject to funding and delivery).

Starting Date: Immediately

The India Programme Associate has a fantastic opportunity to support the development and implementation of MPP’s activities in India and work with regional partners to fast-track India’s clean chemicals (green ammonia and methanol) and fertiliser sector transition.

This is an exceptional opportunity to support a lean team coordinating across central and state governments, industry leaders, project developers, financiers, and technical experts — building bottom-up insights and developing unique ground-truth perspectives on one of the world’s most consequential industrial decarbonisation opportunities. It comes at a pivotal moment for India, as the country scales its National Green Hydrogen Mission, designs market mechanisms, and positions itself as a globally competitive producer and exporter of green hydrogen.

The India Programme Associate’s responsibilities include:

1. Programme Delivery

  • Assist in the execution of programme objectives, milestones, and outcomes, including developing strategic pathways to unlock lead markets for green ammonia, methanol, and fertilisers in India and for exports.
  • Contribute to a flagship strategic study on pathways to transition India’s fertiliser sector to green inputs — covering stakeholder dynamics, policy, market restructuring, and financing dimensions.
  • Assist in the delivery of knowledge products, including policy briefs, stakeholder presentations, technical notes, and research reports.

2. Stakeholder Engagement & Consensus Building

  • Support high-level dialogues with central government ministries, state governments, project developers, fertiliser producers, financiers, and off-takers.
  • Engage with national and international partners to secure public and private buy-in for lead-market mechanisms and strategic supply pathways.
  • Contribute to building momentum for voluntary and policy-driven demand creation through buyer platforms, first-mover coalitions, and cross-sectoral convenings.

3. Technical & Policy Insight

  • Assist in overseeing techno-economic modelling and scenario analysis of green ammonia, methanol, and fertiliser value chains.
  • Support the identification of feasible regulatory and market-based mechanisms to inform policy recommendations and project investment cases.
  • Contribute to stress-testing real-economy FOAK project bankability and designing enabling mechanisms (e.g., offtake aggregation, book-and-claim, government-backed sales processes) tailored to the Indian context.

Position Requirements:

  • 2–5 years of experience in energy or climate policy, project-level techno-economics, green hydrogen, industry decarbonisation, or with a top-tier consulting firm.
  • Good knowledge of energy and/or industry decarbonisation with familiarity of India’s energy and industrial policy landscape.
  • Knowledge of green hydrogen value chains (ammonia, methanol, fertilisers) and relevant regulatory frameworks (e.g., EU RFNBO, IMO, SECI tenders, National Green Hydrogen Mission) a strong advantage.
  • Proactive and self-starter, with an appetite for working autonomously in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment.
  • Excellent project management and coordination skills — ability to support a complex programme delivered by a lean team, while adapting to changing circumstances.
  • Clear, high-quality communication: verbal, written, and presentation. Ability to develop compelling narratives based on quantitative and qualitative data, and to write concise, well-structured documents conveying clear but subtle messages.
  • Excellent analytical, quantitative and problem-solving skills; comfort with techno-economic or policy modelling and ability to shape strategies based on insights.
  • Experience in government engagement, policy advocacy, or interacting with senior executives preferred.
  • Ability to develop and nurture trusting relationships and partnerships with a range of stakeholders (including senior executives and public officials).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English. Working knowledge of Hindi an advantage.
  • Master’s or equivalent degree.
