Job Summary

The sustainability intern will contribute to impactful sustainability initiatives at one of the nation's busiest airport systems. This internship offers hands-on analytical research, and communications experience. The Sustainability Intern will be an active member of MAC’s Sustainability Department, providing direct support to the MAC’s Energy and Building Performance Manager and the MAC’s Sustainability Engagement Coordinator. The position will also regularly interact with the MAC’s Waste Specialist and Sustainable Design and Construction Manager. The internship will have a primary focus on supporting the MAC’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2030, and will also provide support for the water, waste, and engagement goals as needed. The Intern will participate in monthly Sustainability Working Group meetings for all four goal areas.

Job Duties

  • 25% Create and refine inventories of energy-using assets and systems across the MAC’s seven metropolitan airports (e.g., gas-fired equipment, climate controls, and lighting).
  • 25% Analyze data from MAC data platforms to inform sustainability efforts (e.g., use B3 Benchmarking platform to drive energy conservation, and EV charger's platform to assess utilization and electrical demand).
  • 15% Develop memos, PowerPoints, emails, charts and graphs to communicate findings and recommendations. The final deliverable from internship will be in the form of a short report and PowerPoint.
  • 10% Assist MAC staff in conducting sustainability assessments (e.g., energy audits, waste audits, and/or multi-faceted sustainability assessments)
  • 10% Research and recommend sustainable policies, technologies and programs as needed.
  • 5% Collaborate with the Sustainability Engagement Coordinator to support the creation of communications products (e.g., the Sustainability Department’s monthly newsletter).
  • 5% Actively participate in Sustainability Working Group meetings (Emissions, Water, Waste, and Engagement Groups each meet monthly)
  • 5% Participate in MAC’s internship professional development and aviation-learning opportunities.

Minimum Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program OR be a recent graduate (within 12 months from posting date) in sustainability or other related fields such as environmental/climate science, data science, engineering, anthropology/psychology/sociology, communications/marketing, or planning/policy.
  • Coursework or experience in carbon accounting (emissions that constitute Scopes 1, 2, and 3)
  • Intermediate to proficient skills with Microsoft products including Excel and PowerPoint
  • Valid driver's license
  • Reliable transportation to commute between job sites

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience supporting the implementation of sustainability programs
  • Knowledge of regulations and standards related to waste, energy, water efficiency, and/or emissions
  • Experience with carbon accounting strategies for Scope 3 emissions categories
  • Experience with building benchmarking software (example: B3)
  • Experience with advanced data analysis
