Strategic Communications Associate - Brussels

This position is with the Global Strategic Communications Council (GSCC), a global network of communications professionals in the field of climate, energy and nature. GSCC is a programme hosted by the Meliore Foundation.

Decarbonising the built environment is among the most urgent climate imperatives. Buildings are responsible for a substantial share of global emissions, while also being central to people’s daily lives through affordability, comfort and health. We are hiring an experienced communications specialist to join the GSCC Built Environment Hub to help shift public, political and market narratives away from abstract climate talk and toward practical living standards. The position is based in Brussels.

Reporting to the Built Environment Europe Manager, the Associate will follow EU policy files relating to buildings and hold the operational coordination for EU-wide efforts and campaigns run across our European geographies.

The ideal candidate is a growth-oriented team player who is comfortable managing day-to-day delivery under clear guidance and translating complex building regulations into sharp, politically relevant narratives.

How you'll contribute

In close cooperation with a network of Brussels-based partners and colleagues across European country desks (such as Germany, Poland and Spain), the Associate will be responsible for:

• Operationalizing EU campaign strategies: Drafting and distributing a wide range of materials, including press releases, media backgrounders, social media content, and campaign toolkits focused on core EU building files like the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) and the Emissions Trading System 2 (ETS2).
• Cross-border campaign coordination: Acting as the operational anchor connecting Brussels policy milestones to national arguments, ensuring a seamless timeline and messaging dynamic between Brussels-level developments and national desks.
• Team and network coordination: Assisting in organizing and running the wider built environment team and managing its day-to-day coordination with the rest of the GSCC network.
• Partner ecosystem support: Mapping and engaging a diverse landscape of Brussels-based advocacy groups, think tanks, civil society organizations, and industry partners (such as CAN Europe, Agora, C40, or Green Building Councils) to support their collective campaign impact.
• Media relations support: Fostering links with Brussels correspondents and pan-European media outlets to help brief reporters and boosting media awareness of core narratives.
• Impact monitoring: Keeping track of EU media mentions, monitoring campaign outcomes, and contributing to tracking data to help evaluate and refine cross-border strategy.
• Spokespeople cultivation: Identifying and elevating diverse, non-traditional voices who can talk convincingly about building standards, health, and energy bills in the EU context.

To succeed in this role, you will have the below qualities:

• An enthusiasm to learn about complex, technical topics, such as building decarbonization, and help transform policy details into compelling narratives around everyday bills, comfort, and infrastructure.
• A good baseline understanding of EU institutions, policy-making processes, and the inner workings of the Brussels bubble.
• Familiarity with the European media landscape and an understanding of strategic story placement in an international political context.
• Experience crafting clear written content with a journalistic flair.
• The organizational and collaboration skills necessary to work across different time zones and country desks using tools like Slack and Google Workspace.
• The capability to meet deadlines reliably under moderate supervision.
• Fluency in written and spoken English.
• A commitment to an inclusive and empowering approach to addressing climate change.
• You must be based in Brussels (coworking access provided).
