R&D Automotive Technician (Hybrid-Electric)

Job Summary:
MATBOCK, LLC, a Virginia Beach, VA-based company, is seeking a dedicated and experienced R&D Automotive Technician to support the development, testing, and validation of next generation Hybrid-Electric Vehicle (HEV) and Power Systems. This role involves hands on work with prototype vehicles, test rigs, and experimental systems to drive innovation and ensure product performance, safety, and reliability. The ideal candidate has a strong mechanical/electrical background, experience with automotive testing, and the ability to work in
a fast-paced research environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assemble, install, and modify prototype vehicle systems, sub-systems, and components for testing.
- Support engineers in setting up instrumentation, data acquisition systems, and test equipment.
- Conduct diagnostic checks, troubleshooting, and repairs on prototype and test vehicles.
- Perform mechanical, electrical, and software-based adjustments to optimize system performance.
- Execute structured test procedures, log data, and document results accurately.
- Maintain test equipment, tools, and facilities to ensure safety and reliability.
- Collaborate with engineers to provide feedback on design improvements based on test results.
- Support tear-down, analysis, and reporting of tested parts or systems.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, industry regulations, and company policies.
- Lead and mentor a team of technicians and junior engineers, fostering an environment of continuous improvement.
- Act as the primary point of contact between the mechanics and engineering teams, facilitating effective communication and collaboration to bridge the gap between practical execution and design innovation, ensuring that feedback and insights are seamlessly integrated into the development process.
- Oversee the planning and execution of test programs, including resource allocation, scheduling, and budgeting, while ensuring alignment with project goals and timelines in collaboration with cross-functional teams to drive strategic initiatives in testing methodologies and process optimizations.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Associate degree in Automotive Technology, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent technical training/experience.
- 3+ years of experience in an automotive, motorsport, or R&D environment.
- Strong hands-on skills in mechanical assembly, electrical systems, and diagnostic troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with data acquisition systems, instrumentation, and vehicle testing methods.
- Proficiency with automotive tools, diagnostic equipment, and workshop practices.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and service manuals.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred:
- Experience working with prototype vehicles and emerging automotive technologies (EVs, ADAS, hybrid systems, etc.).
- Knowledge of CAN bus, ECU flashing, and vehicle communication systems.
- Welding, fabrication, or machining skills.
- Prior experience supporting track testing or durability testing programs.
Work Environment:
- Laboratory and workshop settings.
