About This Position
In this position, the Teacher Naturalist I works with our lead educators to provide safe and engaging after-school activities for a group of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. These after school programs take place in Forest Park, a large public park in Springfield Ma. The program begins by walking from our partner schools into the park. The program itself takes place outdoors and on the trails of Forest Park. Goals of our after-school programs in Forest Park are to increase feelings of comfort in nature, model and practice leadership, and have fun while being outdoors. To do this we engage after-schoolers with inquiry-based activities around natural history as well as teambuilding games and challenges.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Teach after-school education programs for a group of approximately 12 students from the Springfield Realization and Forest Park Middle Schools.
- Support the after-school program, primarily, off site at Forest Park.
- Expand teaching capacity, meet desired/required instructor and participant ratios for programs, and lead educational activities.
- Work as part of the West Region education team to plan, and teach engaging, inquiry-based, age-appropriate environmental education programs for middle school students and other audiences.
- Prepare and lead hikes in Forest Park for the purpose of exploration and learning.
- Engage participants in hands-on, minds-on learning through activity stations and guided inquiry that develops science skills and ecology and conservation knowledge.
- Work with Education Coordinators, as needed, to design programs to meet learning goals for a local middle school on earth and life science and environmental education.
- Prepare and teach outdoor learning programs for the after-school programs.
- Maintain educational supplies, curricula, materials, and resources.
- Maintain the safety of all participants and staff as a priority.
- Develop and establish the students’ comfort level in nature through fun and hands on activities.

- Education and/or training in life, earth, or environmental sciences, environmental education, nature interpretation, K-12 education, or equivalent.
- Experience leading environmental education programs for children or any equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Ability to exercise cultural competence and best practices in inclusion.
Nice to Haves:
- Knowledge of local natural history, conservation, and environmental education.
- Familiarity with culturally responsive teaching or other equity-based pedagogy.
- Experience delivering urban environmental education programming or equivalent.
- First Aid and CPR (child and adult) certification (training provided upon hire, if needed).
- Proficiency in Spanish.
Compensation & Benefits
This position’s base salary is $18.50/hr. This is a part-time, per diem, hourly, non-benefited position.
There are two Teacher Naturalist I positions available from 3/21-5/18.
The schedule is Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 3pm to 6pm plus an additional hour of prep time. Average 10 hours per week.
There is no work the week of April 18.
There is a possibility of extending per diem hours beyond the 5/18 end date.
Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.
Mass Audubon requires that all staff, regardless of their work location, disclose their vaccination status. Proof of vaccination status will be required immediately upon hire. This should also include a booster shot if it has been 5 months since you were initially vaccinated.
