About This Position

The Coastal Waterbird Program Field Coordinator (Islands) position supervises research, monitoring, management, and protection of coastal birds and other natural resources, and trains and supervises staff and volunteers in these activities. This is a full-time, year-round position based out of Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, Edgartown MA (covering coastal field sites on Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket).

Duties & Responsibilities

• Play a role in development and implementation of Islands Coastal Waterbird Program (CWP) program goals and annual objectives; collaborate with the Islands and CWP program staffs to hire field monitors
• Lead yearly training efforts and supervise 4 seasonal field staff (4-6-month positions) and additional volunteers in collection and management of biological data on nesting, foraging
• Oversee and participate field monitoring and research efforts at complex sites, including monitoring schedules, camera data, fencing, predator monitoring, and reporting
• Supervise and support Islands Coastal Waterbird Program field staff to meet research, wildlife management and education objectives of the program
• Lead equipment management efforts, including fencing, game cameras, boats, signs, and other required field gear
• Accomplish the wildlife management and education objectives of the Islands Coastal Waterbird Program, including the fulfillment of objectives for major contracts that fund the program, including towns, private beach organizations, and NGOs
• Establish and cultivate key contract relationships with public and private landowners including the Town of Edgartown, the Town of Oak Bluffs, the Town of Tisbury, the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head, the Town of Nantucket, Dukes County, and with beach managers on regional beaches; educate beachgoers about coastal wildlife protection
• Assist in management of databases including abundance, productivity and behavioral data; create GIS/Google Earth maps of coastal resources
• Work directly with Islands and CWP staffs to compile data for state plover, tern, and oystercatcher census forms and write summary reports for specific sites on results and management activities
• Supervise and conduct research and monitoring on special projects as directed
• Train and supervise staff to accomplish education objectives including to land owners and managers, community groups, and the public
• Develop, present, organize and/or assist with educational programs (lectures, walks, etc.) as needed
• Work with the Islands team and partners to support Mass Audubon Islands social media and other outreach efforts

Must Have’s:

• Applicants should have a B.S. or B.A. or higher in wildlife biology/management, ecology, zoology, environmental science, or related field, or equivalent experience
• Two years of previous supervisory experience
• Two years of prior experience with piping plover/tern/avian field monitoring, data collection and management required
• Demonstrated experience utilizing judgment in field-based wildlife research and management projects
• Proven ability to collaborate and coordinate with partners
• Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing
• Experience in behavioral data collection, band-reading and resighting, wildlife tracking, coastal wildlife management issues, and GIS mapping preferred
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Nice to Have’s:

• Ability to operate ATV/UTV
• Experience utilizing exclosures and electric fencing
• Experience with field and/or classroom education
• Familiarity and comfort with predator management protocols
• Experience with other wildlife monitoring and management

Compensation & Benefits

This position’s base salary range is $21.10-23.65/hour; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements.

Shared housing may be available.

Work Schedule:

Full time schedule of 40 hours, weekends included. Days off are often not consecutive during the field season (April through August). Off season hours may be more regular (September through March).

Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.
