About This Position
We are looking for an experienced youth educator who is enthusiastic, highly motivated, dedicated to environmental and climate education, loves to be outdoors and deeply committed to equity in access to nature for all to coordinate both afterschool and out of school time programs at our sanctuaries and in our partnering schools/community organizations. The Afterschool Education Coordinator serves as a member of Mass Audubon’s dynamic Metro West Team, engaging both internal and external stakeholders, ensuring educational and outreach outcomes, and promoting Mass Audubon’s mission of protecting the nature of Massachusetts for wildlife and people. The ideal candidate will also support Mass Audubon’s commitment to equity and justice and bring a diverse range of experiences, expressions, and views to their work. Our Metro West Region includes Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary in Natick, Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary in Lincoln, Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary in Belmont, Magazine Beach Park Nature Center in Cambridge and Brewster’s Woods in Concord.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Work with Metro West K-12 Lead Program Coordinator to develop, coordinate and teach (in the classroom and out in the field) nature-based after school and summer programs to school children preK-12th grade both in school and at our wildlife sanctuaries.
- Create new curricula, in alignment with Mass Audubon Education Department frameworks and best practices, principles of positive youth development, and unique community needs.
- Provide oversight, support and training for Mass Audubon Metro West after school Field Teachers.
- Work closely with after school partners to co-create programming that meet their needs, the students’ needs and furthers Mass Audubon’s mission.
- Cultivate lasting partnerships with after school teachers, administrators and community organizations.
- Initiate strategies for promoting and facilitating positive community relations between Mass Audubon and partnering schools/programs and identify new outreach opportunities.
- Assist with the planning and development of new programs and activities.
- With Metro West K-12 Lead Program Coordinator, develop and facilitate professional development opportunities for after school time staff and other community partners that address the needs of the community and further Mass Audubon’s mission.
- Work with Wildlife Care Department to train on protocols and use of program wildlife in programs.
- Work with Statewide Evaluation and Curriculum Manger, Metro West Education Manger and K-12 Lead Education Coordinator to provide ongoing evaluation of after school programming and participating students.
- Work with Metro West Education Manager and development Team to write and report on grant funding.
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

- Experience working with a variety of young audiences, including school groups (preK-12) community groups, and families.
- Experience teaching in K-12, classrooms and/or afterschool/community programs and knowledge of the Massachusetts curriculum standards.
- At least four years relevant experience in education, community engagement, environmental studies, or related field; bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
- Strong organizational, time management, oral, and written communication skills.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build relationships and deal tactfully with community partners, students, volunteers and staff.
- Strong skills and experience working with diverse groups.
- Ability to exercise cultural competence, and implement best practices in inclusion.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude and work collaboratively, as a positive contributor to the team.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously and work independently.
- Proficiency in standard business software, such as Microsoft Office or G Suite.
- Ability to successfully complete Community First aid/ CPR class, offered by Mass Audubon at no cost
- Have a valid driver’s license.
Nice to Haves:
- Knowledge of local impacts of climate change.
- Fluency in Spanish or Portuguese strongly preferred.
Compensation & Benefits
This position’s base salary range is $21.10 - $23.65 per hour; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements.

The standard work schedule for this position is 40 hours per week Monday through Friday. However, the position requires some flexibility and the ability to work occasional weekends and evenings to meet the needs of the program and organization.
Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.
Mass Audubon requires that all staff, regardless of their work location, disclose their vaccination status. Proof of vaccination status will be required immediately upon hire. This should also include a booster shot if it has been 5 months since you were initially vaccinated.
