Job Description

To ensure environmental compliance and provision of specialist environmental advice within large-scale offshore wind projects throughout the full project lifecycle - from development into construction, operation, and decommissioning. To support the delivery of environmental compliance, manage stakeholders and ensure regulatory and legal compliance throughout implementation, audit and development of new processes. To maintaining high standards of environmental performance in alignment with MASDAR’s strategy on mitigation of liabilities for UK and international asset portfolios.

The role is initially a 12-month fixed-term contract. There may be an opportunity for the position to become permanent, contingent on funding and business circumstance

Responsibilities

  • Contribution to delivery of Environmental Strategy of GOFSW SPV projects
  • Ensure successful and compliant delivery of offshore environmental management activities in alignment with MASDAR’s strategy, by embedding corporate environmental policies, practices, and procedures into daily operations and contractor engagements.
  • Actively contribute to the development and implementation of a best in-class environmental culture across offshore teams and contractor networks, fostering continuous improvement and proactive leadership.

Management of GOFSW Environmental Scope

  • Deliver project-specific Environmental Management Plans, facilitating alignment with regulatory provisions, ensuring clear roles, responsibilities, and compliance across offshore activities.
  • Engage regularly with contractors and stakeholders to ensure alignment with project environmental standards.
  • Support and contribute to environmental initiatives, campaigns, and improvement programs across offshore teams.
  • Monitor and report on environmental performance metrics, identifying trends and opportunities for continuous improvement. Provide support to onshore enabling sites when required.
  • Promote a strong environmental culture through training, mentoring, and active engagement with all personnel involved in offshore operations.

Risk Management

  • Conduct proactive audits and inspections of offshore construction activities, marshalling environmental plan requirements along project stages to mitigate environmental risks.
  • Provide specialist environmental advice to offshore construction teams and office-based engineering personnel on risk management and planning.
  • Review and assess contractor documentation, including risk assessments, method statements, and lifting plans, for compliance and effectiveness.
  • Maintain and update project’s environmental management system, e.g. risk register, to identify, evaluate and mitigate the risks appropriately.

Oversight of Project SPV Environmental Scope

  • Support the delivery of project-specific Environmental Management Plans for offshore construction activities.
  • Coordinate and lead regular environmental audits across project areas, oversee implementation of corrective actions, and maintain a dynamic offshore risk register.
  • Monitor and report environmental performance metrics, including incident rates, observations, and compliance, while identifying trends and opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Promote a proactive environmental culture among offshore crews and contractors through targeted training and initiatives.
  • Stay current with evolving environmental legislation and industry best practices, providing updates and guidance to project teams and contractors.
  • Support offshore project teams in achieving high environmental performance, ensuring safe execution of marine operations.

Incident Investigations and Root Cause Analysis

  • Lead and support environmental non-conformances, or unplanned events with impact to the environment investigations, including root cause analysis and development of corrective and preventative actions with responsible parties.

Stakeholder management

  • Engage with regulatory bodies and marine authorities on offshore environmental matters, ensuring timely reporting and resolution of compliance issues. Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, to ensure compliance and effective communication on environmental matters.

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Professional certification such as NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate, IEMA Practitioner Membership, or Certified Environmental Auditor (desirable)turn13search39. [nebosh.org.uk]
  • GWO Certifications: Working at Heights, Sea Survival, Fire Awareness, First Aid, Manual Handling
  • OGUK Offshore Medical Certificate – Valid and up to date.
  • CDM 2015 Awareness/Training – Understanding of roles and responsibilities under UK Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.

Preferred Experience

  • Demonstrable knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems its application in large infrastructure or offshore projects.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development in environmental management, sustainability, or offshore renewables.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in environmental management, with at least 2–3 years in offshore wind, marine infrastructure, or major infrastructure projects.
  • Experience in environmental compliance, permitting, and regulatory engagement for offshore wind or similar sectors.
  • Direct involvement in environmental impact assessments (EIA), stakeholder engagement, and management of environmental risks and opportunities.
  • Experience supporting project development, construction, and operational phases, including contractor and supply chain environmental assurance.

Job-Specific Skills

  • Strong knowledge of UK HSE legislation.
  • Ability to review and assess complex documentation.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, flexible and able to work in multi-cultural and multi-discipline environment.
  • Skilled in using digital tools for reporting, remote engagement (e.g., MS Teams), and data analysis.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills to apply in high-pressure offshore environment.
  • Committment to continuous improvement and safety culture development.
