Energy Executive in Residence - OpenGrid (EV Infrastructure & Demand Response)
Build the Grid Integrated EV Charging Infrastructure of the Future with OpenGrid
The Maryland Energy Innovation Accelerator (MEIA), created by the Maryland Clean Energy Center (MCEC), is a venture development program dedicated to transforming cutting-edge climate research into investible, scalable businesses that drive economic growth and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Through our Energy Executive in Residence (EEIR) program, we connect seasoned industry professionals with emerging Maryland-based climate tech startups, giving entrepreneurs the commercialization support they need while providing executives with an opportunity to lead high-impact ventures.
MEIA is seeking an experienced Energy Executive in Residence (EEIR) to accelerate the commercialization of OpenGrid. Co-founded by Nanbo Liu and Mike Wen, OpenGrid’s GridCharge VPP Solution is a hardware-backed platform that integrates up to 1 MW of energy storage and battery-backed EV chargers with advanced Virtual Power Plant (VPP) technology to enhance grid resilience and optimize energy use. The system transforms passive electricity consumers into active grid participants, enabling real-time demand response, leveraging EV chargers and energy storage to balance grid load, reduce peak demand, and improve overall energy efficiency.
The team is seeking an EEIR to help with project implementation. The EEIR will play a critical role in helping OpenGrid deploy three commercial pilots across grocery-anchored shopping centers in Maryland.
EEIR Responsibilities and Capabilities Include:
- Proven senior-level experience (10-15+ years) in utility, energy efficiency, demand response, or VPP programs, with the ability to engage utilities, regulators, and energy market stakeholders.
- Commercial and go-to-market leadership in distributed energy resources (DER), battery storage (front-of-the-meter and behind-the-meter), and interconnection requirements.
- Industry network across East Coast utilities (e.g., Exelon, Pepco, BGE)
- Technical understanding of VPP, microgrid, DERs, and DR programs. (Preferred but not required)
The EEIR will play a critical role in helping OpenGrid scale its turnkey, low-barrier-to-entry VPP solution, bridging advanced technology and real-world energy applications.
