The Opportunity


The Environmental Sustainability team is seeking a passionate and suitably qualified Climate Change and Sustainability Officer to help lead Council's response to the climate risk and drive meaningful sustainability outcomes for the City of Maribyrnong.

Key Responsibilities


  • Support and provide strategic advice to the Coordinator Environmental Sustainability to help achieve Council Plan environmental targets and objectives.
  • Undertake research and analysis to provide timely, evidence-based advice on emerging trends, policy, innovation, technology and best practice in environmental sustainability.
  • Lead the development and delivery of environmental sustainability strategies, policies, plans, projects and programs.
  • Build strong partnerships across Council, with regional networks and with external stakeholders to progress environmental outcomes for both Council and the community.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities that strengthen Council's leadership in climate action and environmental sustainability.


About You


To be considered for this role, you will bring:


  • A tertiary qualification in Environmental Policy, Environmental Science, Environmental Social Science, Environmental Management or a related field, together with at least three years' experience in environment, sustainability and project management roles.
  • Demonstrated experience in a climate emergency-focused role, with a clear understanding of strategic and practical responses to climate-related challenges.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, policy and regulatory frameworks applicable to this role.
  • Strong interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills, with a proven ability to build trusted relationships, influence outcomes, work collaboratively and develop partnerships.
  • A valid Working with Children Check.
  • No relevant criminal record found in a police check.
  • Australian or New Zealand citizenship, or Australian permanent residency.
