Public Relations Account Manager
Account Manager
Mahoney Communications Group
New York preferred — remote flexible | $75,000–95,000 | Full-time
WHO WE ARE
Mahoney Communications Group is a boutique PR and communications agency working exclusively in climate tech, advanced materials, energy infrastructure, and industrial technology. Our clients are founders and operators doing genuinely hard things — pulling carbon out of the air, building the supply chains the energy transition needs, keeping the grid resilient, and making industrial processes cleaner.
We are a team of seven. Nobody is sending us to Cannes. What we do have is work that matters, clients who are building something real, and a team that is sharp, close-knit, and genuinely good at what it does. We take the work seriously and have a good time doing it.
We are growing and we are looking for the right person to grow with us.
THE ROLE
We are hiring an Account Manager to own day-to-day execution across a portfolio of clients. You will be the primary point of contact for your accounts — running weekly syncs, managing deliverables, drafting content, pitching journalists, and keeping everything moving with confidence and care.
Senior team members are here for strategy, support, and the big picture. The day-to-day is yours. That means real ownership and real visibility into the work from the start — not months of being in the background before anyone trusts you with a client call.
A note on what ownership actually means here.
We are not looking for someone who waits to be told what to do. We are looking for someone who sees what needs to happen, makes it happen, and brings the senior team in when it matters. If you have been doing that in your current role and not getting the credit or the autonomy you deserve, we would like to talk.
WHAT YOU WILL OWN
• A portfolio of 5–7 clients — you are their go-to person, not a backup when the senior team is unavailable.
• Weekly syncs, agendas, and recaps. You run the calls, capture the notes, and follow up on what is outstanding.
• First drafts of everything — press releases, pitches, bylines, LinkedIn content, coverage trackers, media lists. You bring the senior team drafts, not questions.
• Proactive communication with clients. You surface updates, flag risks early, and keep people informed without being asked.
• Media relations — pitching, journalist outreach, interview scheduling, and coverage tracking across specialized trades and national outlets.
• Keeping multiple accounts moving simultaneously. You are organized, you know your deadlines, and nothing falls through without you catching it first.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The must-haves:
• 3–5 years of agency PR experience. You have owned accounts before — run the calls, managed the relationship, tracked the deliverables. Not just supported someone else doing it.
• You can hold several clients at once without losing track of anything. This is the baseline.
• You are a strong writer. A clean first draft of a press release or pitch comes naturally to you.
• You are organized in a way that gives the people around you confidence. Things do not fall through when you are on them.
• You are a self-starter who communicates clearly and proactively — with clients and with colleagues.
The things that will move you to the top of the list:
• Experience in climate tech, energy, advanced materials, industrial technology, or an adjacent sector. You do not need an engineering background — but genuine curiosity about the space and comfort getting up to speed on technical subject matter will serve you well here.
• Existing relationships with journalists or editors covering climate, energy, or technology beats.
• Experience working with founders or executives at early to growth-stage companies — the kind of clients who are fast-moving and opinionated.
• Based in New York or open to being there regularly. We will prioritize NYC-based candidates, though we are open to the right person wherever they are.
A FEW THINGS WORTH KNOWING
We want to give you an honest picture so you can decide if this is the right fit.
• Our clients are infrastructure companies, deep tech startups, and industrial operators. The work is technical and specialized. If you have been wanting to work on something with more substance than a product launch, you will find it here.
• We work with focused budgets. Our clients are mostly early to growth-stage companies with strategic communications programs — not large brand spends. We find that creative and satisfying. It helps to feel the same way.
• The team is small and everyone's contribution is visible. That means you will see the impact of your work clearly, and your colleagues will too. We think that is a good thing.
• The sectors we work in are specialized. Some days the right journalist for a story is one person at one trade publication. You will become good at finding them and building those relationships over time.
We are a small but mighty team and we are proud of that.
If you are looking for a place where your work is seen, your ideas are heard, and the clients are doing something that actually matters — we think you will like it here. We are building something good and we want the right people building it with us.
WHAT WE ACTUALLY WORK ON
Our current client work spans:
• Carbon removal and direct air capture — pulling CO2 out of the air and finding productive uses for it
• Critical minerals and battery materials — the supply chains that make electrification possible
• Wildfire intelligence and utility grid resilience — keeping the lights on and the fires manageable
• Industrial heat and advanced manufacturing — decarbonizing the hard stuff
• Clean energy infrastructure and project finance — building the grid of the future
• Climate-focused venture capital — the capital behind all of the above
The portfolio evolves as the energy transition does. The right candidate is curious across all of it.
WHAT WE OFFER
• $75,000–95,000 base salary, commensurate with experience and how independently you operate.
• Full benefits — healthcare, retirement, PTO.
• Flexible remote work with preference for New York presence.
• Real client access from day one. You will not spend months in the background before anyone lets you run a call.
• A close team that works hard, takes the work seriously, looks out for each other, and has a genuinely good time doing it.
HOW TO APPLY
Send your resume and a short note — two or three sentences is plenty — telling us what draws you to this kind of work. We read everything and we respond. We are not looking for a formal cover letter, just a real sense of who you are and why this resonates.
