Development Engineer in Deep Tech Startup (focus on 3D Printing/Components)
What you will be doing here
At MAGNOTHERM, we are developing a revolutionary refrigeration technology that has the potential to eliminate up to 30% of energy demand and 100% of direct greenhouse gas emissions in the cooling industry. Our vision is to provide the cleanest and most sophisticated cooling solutions to reduce climate impact and costs. Founded in 2019, our deep tech company is a spin-off of the Technical University of Darmstadt.
We are seeking a hands-on Development Engineer for Magnetocaloric Cooling Systems. In this role, you will develop a deep understanding of magnetocaloric cooling. You will design, prototype, and optimize components critical to our magnetocaloric systems, transforming cutting-edge technology into market-ready products. You will take full ownership of your designs, working closely with an interdisciplinary team.
Curious to learn more? Then apply now!
Tasks include:
- Design and develop integrable components for magnetocaloric cooling systems such as magnet assemblies, fluid systems, air distribution and electrical control systems.
- Create CAD models and efficient production data.
- Optimize components for mass production, ensuring a balance between performance, cost, and manufacturability.
- Collaborate closely with the tech team and product managers to design integrated solutions.
- Maintain product data, create and maintain BOMs, and support purchasing by obtaining supplier quotes for custom and standard parts.
- Create and maintain manufacturing guides for series production.
- Solve real-world engineering challenges in rapid development cycles.
What you would ideally bring to the table
A. Skillset
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g. Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or similar).
- Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping methods (3D printing, CNC machining, injection moulding, laser cutting, PCB soldering).
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, including tolerance analysis and design for manufacturability.
- Ability to quickly learn and understand the fundamentals of the magnetocaloric system.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive, independent work ethic.
- Ability to deal with tight deadlines and continue to work in a focused manner.
B. Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- 1-5 years of experience in hardware product development (internships and student projects or work groups all account for experience, feel free to list these in your CV).
- Experience with manufacturing processes (injection moulding, CNC machining, sheet metal, additive manufacturing).
- English speaking (C1+) as we are an international team; German skills (C1+) are also required for this position to work closely with local suppliers.
- Ability to work on-site with occasional flexibility for remote work (we are an office-first company).
As a startup, we value flexibility, creativity, and a hands-on mindset. This role is for those who thrive in fast-paced environments and are ready to turn ideas into reality.
What you will get from the job
- Flexible hours and 30 days of vacation.
- Compensation aligned with startup standards, with room to grow as the company scales.
- A team that's sharp, interdisciplinary, and doesn't take itself too seriously.
- The chance to pioneer technology that actually helps the planet.
- Ownership, responsibility, and a culture where learning from mistakes is expected.
- A front-row seat as a deep-tech company scales.
- Memes. Good ones. And lots of them.
About us
We believe in science; we believe in facts. Climate change is speeding up more than ever and we need to do something about it. We are convinced that we need better technologies to overcome this tremendous challenge – or more precisely: this tremendous threat to humanity. We are on a mission to decarbonize the refrigeration industry and reduce its contribution of 7% to global greenhouse gas emissions.
Support us in making our vision a reality – join us!
We are material scientists, chemists, physicists, a lot of engineers as well as product and graphic designers. We are an agile team of bright minds with diverse and international backgrounds. We love hanging out together, we argue about new technologies, politics, the best sport, and food trends. Basically, we are human.
MAGNOTHERM is an equal opportunity employer. We embrace diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
