About the role

Join magniX as an ESS Test Engineer and play a pivotal role in advancing electric aviation through cutting-edge lithium-ion battery technology. You'll lead comprehensive testing programs for Energy Storage Systems, from individual cell characterization to full-scale integrated battery systems, supporting the development of next-generation electric aircraft propulsion. This position reports directly to the Test Engineer Manager.

Primary Responsibilities:

Laboratory Leadership & Operations

  • Commission and operate state-of-the-art battery laboratories for development testing, design verification, and failure mode analysis
  • Execute comprehensive testing protocols spanning individual components, battery modules, and complete integrated systems on test rigs and aircraft platforms
  • Develop innovative testing methodologies for battery cell and Energy Storage System (ESS) management, measurement, and data acquisition systems

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with program management, simulation, design, and test integration teams to develop testing strategies, define requirements, and coordinate resource allocation
  • Collaborate with instrumentation specialists to design, install, and maintain advanced data acquisition systems optimized for ESS testing
  • Work alongside test operations teams to establish and operate specialized test facilities and high-power electrical equipment

Technical Documentation & Analysis

  • Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation including test instructions, plans, reports, and datasets within our quality management framework
  • Develop advanced data processing solutions using LabVIEW, HBM Perception, and/or Python for measurement, control, and analysis
  • Design and commission high-power electrical test systems supporting battery development and verification

Integration & Field Support

  • Support ESS integration into flying test platforms and participate in flight test operations
  • Provide on-site technical support at customer locations and adapt to rotating shift schedules as program needs require
  • Contribute to broader magniX testing initiatives beyond ESS when technical expertise is needed

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Materials Science, or related discipline). Master’s is preferred.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with battery systems testing and development, or equivalent specialization through graduate education. Specific experience with lithium-ion batteries is strongly desired.

Technical Expertise:

  • Proven battery testing knowledge including cell characterization, module testing, and system-level validation
  • Experience with battery cyclers (Maccor, Arbin, NEWARE or similar) and potentiostat systems (BioLogic or similar)
  • High-voltage DC systems proficiency with experience in HVDC sources and supporting electrical equipment
  • Advanced LabVIEW proficiency with additional skills in MATLAB, Python, or C++ highly valued
  • Hands-on technical skills including workshop tools, soldering, and general fabrication capabilities

Physical Requirements & Logistics:

  • Physical capability to lift, carry, and push up to 50 lbs
  • Flexibility for occasional travel and shift work to support program objectives

Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced Technical Skills

  • Electrochemical characterization expertise including dQ/dV analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)
  • Experience in lithium-ion abuse testing such as UN38.3 compliance tests and DO-311A safety tests
  • SolidWorks Electrical proficiency or similar tools for schematic design and wiring diagrams

Industry & Regulatory Knowledge

  • FAA certification experience with aircraft systems and components
  • Battery safety and failure mode analysis background
  • Quality management system experience in regulated industries
  • Startup or emerging technology company experience valued

Location

  • Applicants must be willing and able to commute to magniX's location in Everett, Washington.
  • Applicants must be willing and able to travel to offsite test facilities in different locations within the state and/or country.

This position's approximate base salary range is $120,000-$140,000 annually.
