Student Assistant for the LCA and Environmental Impact Team

Who we are

The Mærsk McKinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping is a not-for-profit Center dedicated to decarbonizing the maritime industry. Our team unites experts from many fields – engineers, economists, analysts, software developers, and more – who share a passion for making a real difference. We’re based in Copenhagen but collaborate globally. We value collaboration, curiosity, and treating people (and the planet) right.

Who you are

To be considered for this role, you must be enrolled in a study program in the Copenhagen area, preferably either in the third year of a Bachelor’s degree or the first year of a Master’s program. You may be studying environmental science, engineering, economics, data science, or a related discipline. Prior experience with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a strong advantage but not a strict requirement. What matters most is your ability to work carefully with data, think critically, and learn fast.

You are a curious, analytical, and detail-oriented with a strong interest in sustainability, climate policy, and data-driven analysis. You enjoy working systematically with data, building structure where information is fragmented, and contributing to work that has real-world impact.

You are comfortable working independently, but you also value collaboration and clear communication. You care about evidence-based climate action and are motivated by contributing to credible solutions.

What you will do

You will join the LCA & Environmental Impact team, supporting the development of the Center’s statistical benchmarking methodology for default emission factors of marine fuels. This work directly underpins the Center’s contributions to IMO decarbonisation policy and engagement with fuel producers, regulators, and industry stakeholders.

Your role will focus on data collection, structuring, and quality assurance, helping to build and maintain a robust evidence base that supports transparent and comparable lifecycle assessments.

Your key tasks will include:

  • Collecting, reviewing, and structuring lifecycle inventory (LCI) data from scientific literature, public databases, policy sources, and industry documentation
  • Building and maintaining a structured LCA data library to support statistical benchmarking across fuel pathways
  • Supporting the development and application of the Center’s statistical benchmarking methodology, including data screening and consistency checks
  • Assisting with lifecycle inventory preparation and visualization of LCA results
  • Supporting documentation of assumptions, data gaps, and methodological choices
  • Contributing to internal presentations and technical material used in policy and industry engagement, including IMO-related work
  • Supporting ad hoc analytical tasks related to alternative marine fuels and decarbonisation pathways

Why join us

You will work in a high-trust, intellectually rigorous environment where analytical quality matters. This role offers hands-on experience in maritime decarbonisation, with direct exposure to how data and LCA shape international climate policy.

We offer:

  • Flexible working hours (approx. 15 hours/week) that respect your studies and exam periods
  • Close collaboration with experienced LCA practitioners and technical and policy-facing experts
  • The opportunity to see your work contribute to real policy processes
  • A supportive student assistant community within the Center
  • A chance to develop highly transferable skills in data handling and LCA
