Description

At Loam, we have the earth in our hands. As a team of scientists, farmers and entrepreneurs, we are on a mission to improve the world’s farmland and address climate change.

We are developing microbial technology to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and build carbon in agricultural soils. With a dedicated agenda to deliver nature based solutions, we help farming businesses prosper by boosting yield and soil health and enabling access to carbon markets.

As a start-up with ambitious founders and investors, our work is fast-paced and multidimensional. We foster a supportive and diverse workplace, where every team member is encouraged to learn and grow beyond their area of expertise.

While everyone at Loam is working in different roles, we all have one job: to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and store it stably in the soil.

About the role

We are looking for a Modelling Specialist to contribute to the development of robust carbon modelling approaches as the broader team works together across:

Assess soil sequestration potential and prioritize areas for business development
Optimize carbon credit claims, by ensuring robustness and traceability of the “carbon journey”
Decrease the cost of SOC quantification by the innovative combination of different approaches

Responsibilities

Use mathematics, statistical tools and computer-aided techniques (including machine learning) to develop models and conduct analytics
Reverse modelling to develop hypotheses based on outcomes
Incorporate multi-scale data sets into models
Test and validate hypotheses through the application of a range of advanced mathematical, statistical, scientific and / or computational techniques
Proactively identify opportunities to improve existing models and analytical tools
Develop solutions using substantial creativity, resourcefulness, innovation, negotiation and diplomacy.
Help improve model lifecycle to reflect the industry's best practices.
Work closely with teams across Loam (Microbiology, Carbon Markets, etc.) to provide analytical solutions to meet various needs.
Requirements
Master's or doctoral degree in applied mathematics, biology, statistics, data science, or other quantitative field.
Minimum of five years of relevant experience in spatial modelling/validation or quantitative analytics in the context of soil, carbon, biology, or microbiology.
Demonstrated experience working with large datasets collected through aerial surveys, remote sensing, sensor data, and academic research
Demonstrated experience in initiating, developing, and managing model development projects. Specific experience with partial least square regression, random forest, or support vector machine algorithms helpful.
Demonstrated experience in using R and/or Python for statistical analysis, machine learning, and big data analysis. Knowledge of programming languages SAS, C++/Java and SQL would be an asset.
Demonstrated experience in reporting and visualization
Understanding of proximal and remote measurement technologies, field, or laboratory soil carbon measurements, land carbon building technologies and methods
Strong ability to share, generate and advise on various data models for technical, non-technical and administrative personnel
