Position Summary

Lion Energy is seeking a Model Based Controls Engineer to support development of advanced control systems for next-generation energy storage and portable power solutions. This role focuses on independently developing control models, algorithms, and simulation environments while contributing to system-level product development. Engineers in this role demonstrate strong technical proficiency, collaborate across disciplines, and help ensure high-performance and reliable control system implementations.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Independently design, develop, and implement control systems for energy storage and power conversion products
  • Develop and maintain plant models for energy storage systems using MATLAB, Simulink, and Simscape
  • Design and simulate control algorithms supporting:
    • DC-DC and DC-AC conversion
    • Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT)
    • Battery charge management and protection
    • Energy management and system-level power coordination
  • Perform simulation and validation of control algorithms using plant models and system simulations
  • Generate production-ready control algorithm source code using model-based design workflows
  • Collaborate with embedded software engineers to integrate generated code into hardware platforms and BSP layers
  • Participate actively in system architecture discussions, design reviews, and code reviews
  • Understand system-level interactions, integration constraints, and performance trade-offs
  • Identify, debug, and resolve moderately complex modeling and control system issues
  • Partner with validation teams to define test procedures and verification strategies
  • Document models, algorithms, and technical decisions supporting development and validation efforts

Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
  • Typically 2–5 years of controls engineering or model-based design experience
  • Strong proficiency in MATLAB, Simulink, and Simscape
  • Experience designing and validating control algorithms using simulation and model-based development workflows
  • Working knowledge of embedded system integration principles
  • Familiarity with LabVIEW or other test automation tools preferred
  • Understanding of energy storage and power electronics systems is a plus, including:
    • MPPT
    • DC-DC converters
    • Inverters
    • Battery management and energy management systems
  • Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) concepts and SysML is a plus
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills
  • Experience developing validation procedures and test plans preferred
