Job Responsibilities
- Advise clients on compliance with environmental statutes and regulations, including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA, CERCLA, and related state laws.
- Prepare, review, and negotiate environmental provisions in commercial contracts, real estate transactions, project finance deals, and M&A agreements.
- Manage environmental permitting processes, impact assessments, and agency submissions for infrastructure, energy, manufacturing, and land use projects.
- Represent clients in administrative proceedings, enforcement actions, and environmental litigation involving contamination, natural resources, and regulatory disputes.
- Conduct environmental due diligence, risk assessments, and ESG reviews for corporate transactions and investment decisions.
- Collaborate with technical consultants and environmental engineers to interpret scientific data, site assessments, and remediation plans.
- Monitor evolving climate, ESG, and sustainability regulation and advise on policy developments, disclosure requirements, and corporate governance impacts.
Minimum Requirements
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school, with strong academic performance and coursework or clinical experience in environmental or energy law.
- Admission to at least one state bar in the jurisdiction of practice, with the ability to obtain additional admissions as needed.
- 1–5+ years of experience in environmental, energy, land use, or regulatory practice at a law firm, government agency, or in-house legal department (experience expectations may vary by role level).
- Working knowledge of key environmental statutes, regulations, and permitting frameworks at federal, state, and local levels.
- Strong legal research, writing, and advocacy skills, including experience drafting memoranda, regulatory comments, and environmental clauses in agreements.
- Demonstrated ability to work with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, consultants, and business stakeholders, to solve complex environmental problems.
- High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and capacity to manage multiple matters, deadlines, and regulatory timelines.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with climate change regulation, carbon markets, renewable energy projects, or ESG reporting and sustainability frameworks.
- Background in technical or scientific fields such as environmental science, engineering, chemistry, or geology, or significant experience working with environmental experts.
- Prior work on environmental enforcement defense, citizen suits, toxic torts, or complex contamination and remediation matters.
- Familiarity with environmental aspects of project development, including NEPA, environmental impact statements, zoning, and land use approvals.
- Experience advising multinational clients on cross-border environmental regulation, international treaties, and supply chain sustainability issues.
