Project Manager – BESS NYC


Leap29 are seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead the delivery of BESS projects across New York City and the surrounding region.


The role will manage projects from planning and engineering through permitting, procurement, construction, commissioning and final handover. You will coordinate closely with engineering teams, equipment suppliers, EPC contractors, utilities, customers and other stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule and within budget.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the end-to-end delivery of BESS installation projects, from planning through commissioning and close-out.
  • Develop and manage project scopes, execution plans, schedules and budgets.
  • Coordinate engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning activities.
  • Manage BESS equipment suppliers, EPC contractors, electrical contractors and subcontractors.
  • Oversee construction activities, ensuring compliance with drawings, specifications, safety requirements and schedules.
  • Manage BESS permitting and approvals, including coordination with NYC authorities, utilities and fire/life-safety stakeholders.
  • Support utility interconnection activities and coordinate requirements with utility representatives.
  • Track project costs, forecasts, change orders, RFIs, submittals and overall financial performance.
  • Identify and mitigate project risks affecting cost, schedule, safety and quality.
  • Lead customer, contractor and internal project meetings and provide regular progress reporting.
  • Coordinate BESS testing, commissioning and project turnover.


Required Experience & Skills:

  • Minimum 5 years of project management experience, preferably in energy infrastructure, electrical construction, renewable energy, BESS or related construction.
  • Proven experience managing scope, schedule, budget, contractors and permitting.
  • Strong experience with or understanding of BESS technologies, including batteries, PCS/inverters, EMS, transformers, switchgear and associated electrical systems.
  • Experience managing electrical contractors and construction subcontractors.
  • Familiarity with utility interconnection and electrical infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of New York City and/or New York State permitting and construction requirements highly desirable.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management or a related field.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project; Primavera P6 experience is a plus.


Preferred BESS Experience:

Experience delivering commercial & industrial BESS, behind-the-meter storage, grid-connected systems, solar + storage, microgrids, peak-demand management, resiliency projects or large-scale energy storage is highly desirable.
