Senior Software Engineer (Energy Data Platform)
Remote-first (UK) · Up to £100,000 base + profit share · Greenfield build
About the team
Our client is a global management consultancy whose energy practice leads the world in energy market modelling. Its models help energy companies, investors and governments plan the move to net zero.
It is creating a new Data and Processing Platform team, and you’d be one of its founding engineers. The platform will process everything from research papers to terabytes of hourly energy scenarios projected 50+ years ahead. It starts with internal modellers, will grow to serve users in the US, Australia and Singapore, and will eventually open up to clients.
You’ll report to the Engineering Lead and share the design and build with them, in a small team of five that is set to grow.
What you’ll do
- Design and build the core platform and its services, from first architecture to production
- Own how your services are deployed, hosted, scaled and monitored
- Build the shared libraries, patterns and tooling the rest of the team builds on
- Set up and improve CI/CD and infrastructure as code
- Shape technical decisions and talk the team and stakeholders through the trade-offs
- Work directly with energy modellers to turn their needs into working software
- Mentor junior engineers and help set the team’s engineering standards
What you’ll need
- Strong commercial experience in Python, or in Java or C# with a willingness to work in Python
- Hands-on, recent experience deploying and running your own services on AWS or Azure
- Infrastructure as code you’ve written yourself (Terraform, CDK or Pulumi)
- CI/CD pipelines you’ve built or owned, which you can walk through from commit to production
- Experience leading a piece of technical work end to end, whether a service, a migration or a platform component
Nice to have, not essential
- Databricks, Spark or other data-platform experience
- React/TypeScript for lightweight internal tools
- AI-assisted development (Copilot, Claude or similar)
- An interest in energy or decarbonisation
The stack
Python for the platform, with Java where it integrates with Databricks. It runs mainly on AWS, with Azure for identity. CI/CD is on Azure DevOps, infrastructure is written as code, and internal tools use React/TypeScript. Every engineer gets GitHub Copilot with the latest models from day one.
What’s in it for you
- A founding role on a greenfield platform, with real influence over the architecture and tooling
- Work that directly supports decarbonising the energy industry
- Up to £100,000 base plus profit share
- Pension, private healthcare and dental, and a flexible wellbeing budget
- Remote-first, with occasional London office days, and travel and accommodation covered if you’re outside London
- A collaborative, curious team that encourages learning and new technology
