Role Description
Kijani Biochar is hiring an early career Research Associate to support a series of field-based trials designed to improve operational strategies and evaluate the impacts of biochar production and use on agricultural and community outcomes.
The role combines planning, fieldwork, and data analysis. The Research Associate will coordinate trial activities, collect structured observations and staff feedback, and prepare internal and donor reports that document lessons and learning. This is a hands-on role with frequent travel to field sites and close collaboration with the Biochar Director and wider field teams.
We’re looking for someone who is analytical, well-organized, and passionate about community-centered research and agricultural innovation.
Required:
- Fluent in English and Acholi languages
- Field-hardy and flexible
- Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Environmental Studies, Rural Development, Research Methods, or a related field
- At least 1 year of experience in field research, monitoring and evaluation, or program implementation
- Experience with qualitative research methods, including note-taking, interviews, and observation-based reporting
- Strong writing and synthesis skills, especially in organizing and presenting field insights
- Familiarity with digital documentation tools (e.g., Airtable, KoboToolbox, Google Workspace)
- Ability to travel regularly to rural project areas and work closely with field teams
- Valid motorcycle permit and ability to ride a motorcycle in rural environment (or willingness to learn)
Preferred:
- Experience supporting operational research or pilot testing in community-based programs
- Familiarity with participatory research methods or implementation science approaches
- Experience in agronomy and/or soil science
- Prior involvement in donor reporting or internal learning documentation
This is a short term contract role (~6 months) with possibility for extension. It is an entry-level, field-based position, near GULU, UGANDA (not Lira).
