The Opportunity 


Kanin Energy is seeking a sharp, motivated Analyst or Associate with a background in power generation related project finance, energy M&A/investment banking, or electricity market analysis to join our Calgary-based team. Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Development, this is a high-impact role for someone who wants to move from pure transaction execution into a position that combines financial rigor with direct customer engagement and deal origination. 


The successful candidate will work closely with senior leadership on live transactions, corporate financial modeling, and strategic analysis that directly shapes how Kanin structures and finances its projects. 


Key Responsibilities 


Customer Engagement & Deal Origination 

  • Support engagement with prospective industrial and commercial customers, helping to articulate project value propositions and economic benefits. 
  • Prepare client-facing materials, including proposals, term sheets, and presentations that support the sales and origination process. 
  • Participate in customer engagements alongside originators and business development team members, building foundational relationship-management skills. 


Deal Structuring & Transaction Support 

  • Assist in structuring project finance and M&A transactions, including evaluation of financing alternatives such as debt, tax equity, back-leverage, and structured equity. 
  • Support due diligence processes, coordinate data rooms, and liaise with legal, technical, and tax advisors on live deals. 
  • Assess project revenue mechanics across deregulated power markets (e.g., AESO, ERCOT, PJM, or MISO), incorporating wholesale nodal/zonal pricing, basis risk, capacity mechanisms, and renewable/clean energy attribute monetization (e.g., offsets, RECs). 
  • Draft investment memoranda, board materials, and internal approval packages for new projects and transactions. 


Financial & Corporate Modeling 

  • Build and maintain detailed project finance models, including unlevered and levered returns, debt sizing and sculpting, tax attribute modeling, and sensitivity and scenario analysis. Experience modelling power generation projects using monthly generation profiles, wholesale power curves, heat rate/spark spread dynamics, merchant exposure vs. contracted cash flows is an asset.  
  • Develop and maintain corporate-level consolidation models, including cash flow forecasting, covenant compliance tracking, and portfolio-level analytics. 
  • Support valuation analysis for M&A opportunities, including comparable company, precedent transaction, and discounted cash flow analysis. 


Analytics & Reporting 

  • Prepare recurring and ad hoc analytics for management, investors, and lenders, including KPI tracking and portfolio performance dashboards. 
  • Monitor market trends, including energy pricing, tax credit policy, and capital markets conditions, relevant to project economics and financing strategy. 
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of financial modeling templates, tools, and internal processes. 


Qualifications 


Required 

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, engineering, accounting, or a related field. 
  • 2–3 years of experience in investment banking, corporate development, project finance, M&A advisory, or a related transaction-focused role. 
  • Recently promoted Analyst or newly appointed Associate from a bank, boutique advisory firm, or infrastructure or energy investment group strongly preferred. 
  • Advanced financial modeling skills, including project finance concepts such as debt sizing, cash sweeps, waterfalls, and valuation methodologies. 
  • Strong proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint, with experience working with large data sets and building structured, auditable models. 
  • Demonstrated familiarity with power project revenue drivers, including energy and capacity markets and PPA contract structures. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with customers, lenders, and senior stakeholders. 
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada and based in, or willing to relocate to, Calgary, Alberta. 


Preferred Experience 

  • Exposure to power, renewables, or broader energy and infrastructure transactions. 
  • Working knowledge of North American organized power markets (e.g., AESO, ERCOT, PJM, CAISO) and market design rules. 
  • Familiarity with structured project financing, including tax equity and investment tax credits. 
  • Prior direct client- or investor-facing experience.
