Business Development Manager - Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

Apply now

Is Ikhlas develops, finances and delivers energy projects for commercial and industrial customers — energy efficiency and chiller retrofits today, battery energy storage next. We do not simply sell equipment. We structure the project, arrange the green financing, and stand behind the savings we promise.

We are looking for a Business Development Manager to build the BESS business from the front end — owning it from first conversation to signed contract. You will sell storage two ways: outright purchase, and zero-capex as-a-service, where Is Ikhlas owns the asset and the customer pays out of the savings it produces.

Your market is commercial and industrial sites behind the meter — factories, commercial buildings, hotels, hospitals, cold chain — where maximum demand charges and peak-period tariffs make storage pay. You will also work our existing base of chiller and energy-efficiency customers, where storage is the natural next step in a relationship we already hold.

What you will do

  • Build and own a qualified pipeline of C&I storage opportunities, prospecting directly to plant managers, engineering and facility heads, CFOs and sustainability leads.
  • Qualify early and honestly — tariff class, billing and load data, maximum demand profile, site constraints, solar status and creditworthiness.
  • Cross-sell storage into our existing energy-efficiency and chiller customers, packaged under one proposal and one financing structure.
  • Quantify the value: maximum demand shaving, peak-period energy shifting, solar self-consumption uplift, backup and power quality — and own the savings model behind every proposal.
  • Work with engineering on sizing, site layout, safety and compliance, grid interconnection and the relevant utility and Energy Commission approvals.
  • Structure both outright and as-a-service offers, and work with Finance to test each one for returns and debt service cover before it reaches the customer.
  • Position deals to use available green financing and incentives, and prepare the information those applications need.
  • Write the proposals, tender responses and business cases, negotiate terms, and drive deals to signature.
  • Keep a light referral network warm — solar EPCs, M&E contractors, consulting engineers and property managers who hold customer relationships but have no storage or financing capability.
  • Track tariff and regulatory movement, competitor pricing and market activity, and feed it back into how we price and package.

  • What we are looking for

    • Five to eight years in B2B solution selling, at least three of them in energy — solar, storage, ESCO or energy efficiency, M&E, power systems or electrical equipment.
    • A track record of closing contracts at six- and seven-figure ringgit values, with long, technical sales cycles.
    • A degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, energy, or a business discipline paired with real technical fluency.
    • Working knowledge of Malaysian C&I electricity tariffs — the energy, capacity, network and retail components, Time-of-Use peak windows, and how maximum demand is charged on medium- and high-voltage accounts.
    • The ability to read a load profile and build a defensible savings and payback model in Excel yourself.
    • Comfort with both capex and as-a-service conversations — payback, IRR and how a financed structure is treated.
    • Credibility in both rooms: a technical discussion with a plant engineer, and a commercial case to a CFO.
    • Fluent English and Bahasa Malaysia, own transport, and willingness to travel to sites regularly.

    What will set you apart

    • An existing network among plant and facility managers, property owners, developers or solar EPCs in Malaysia.
    • Experience with green financing and incentive schemes such as MDV / NETF, GTFS, GITA and GITE.
    • Familiarity with current solar self-consumption, net-metering-successor and corporate renewable supply schemes.
    • Experience delivering under performance-contracted or guaranteed-savings arrangements.
    • Experience selling into energy-intensive segments — data centres, cold chain, food and beverage, semiconductors, glove and rubber manufacturing.

    Why this role

    • You open a new business line rather than maintain an existing one, with direct access to the leadership team.
    • In-house project finance capability means you can take a financed structure to a customer instead of losing the deal to a capex objection.
    • Competitive remuneration with a performance-linked incentive
